Not usually before the season starts, but yeah. Lots of players announce their retirement before the season ends. Part of it started when Trever Linden announced his retirement about 3 weeks before the end of the regular season. The Flames being his final game and Iginla forced everyone out of the dressing room to shake his hand. Iggy was aces.


This set off a bit of a trend, but I don't think we've seen too much of it since the Sedin Twins retired a while back.


Maybe that's just the lack of stars retiring the same way.

I can't actually recall if Selanne announced it part way through the season, or if the word just got out there, but I remember his last game at the Dome and the crowd gave him an ovation after the game.
