I’m just wondering what it takes for people to consider a player an “impact player”.

I cant comment too much, but 8 years at those dollars on an oft-injured 28 year-old left-winger?
Not a deal I'd be lining up to make from Minnesota's perspective unless there are ancillary reasons I dont know about.

I've seen it mentioned at least a couple times online today that he may be looking for less term to see where the team is at instead of committing to 8 years. Maybe 12-14 mil over 3-5 years? I wonder if there's any truth to that.
Either way he's an elite player and if he really does just want to get out of Minny that is a massive blow to that franchise. He's so good.

As for not taking the money, that seems like a mistake, but maybe he and his agent have other priorities, or know something we don't.

Neither do 115 point players, and look what handing out the big contract got us.

I knew this is where a lot of people might have been inclined to go, but, there is some validity to it.
But Minny isnt winning anything or going anywhere during KOK's prime and his numbers might be inflated by that fact. If Minny are going nowhere does that inflate KOK's point totals? Similar to what Edmonton did with McDavid since forever with all his marshmallow points?
Then you have to determine...should that affect his contract valuation? The points are nice and all, but how much are they actually helping?

Russians love Florida too; I could see Tampa, or maybe Panthers.

Whole lot of a discussion for a guy who doesn’t want to commit to being paid 16 million in 4 years when he can be paid 20 million. He ain’t signing an 8 year deal with anyone, let alone minny.
Only an idiot is signing an 8 year deal this offseason. Hell, draisaitl should have fired his agent instead of signing for 8 last summer.

I look at it both ways. What do you want? Do want to be the leader that takes the team to the top, or do you want to leave and try to take a leaded team to the top?

Given his injury history it's not a given that he's going to be looked at as a $16 million player when he's 32 years old. There's pros and cons for playing the bridge deal game.

Hehe that's fair. It's strange you choose to concentrate on Huberdeau, and not Tkachuk, Rantanen, Pasternak, Kucherov, etc.
Huberdeau didn't fit this team's style, or the players that were here at the time. When you combine that with D. Sutter's personality, and Huby's crushed confidence, it went from bad to worse.
I'm still a big Kapriz fan.

I'm obviously on an island here (with Everlast) but I wouldn't make Kaprizov the highest paid player in the league (or NHL history) if I were their GM. He's amazing, and I would give him a HUGE payday, but somehow- $16 million plus/year seems way too much to me.

Is it bad that I'd be okay with handing out a top 3 $ contract for this guy? Given the Flames' cap situation and all.
I miss having a superstar up front to be a catalyst when needed. The offense by committee with second liners at best being your top snipers makes being competitive very difficult and heavily reliant on Wolf being elite.
I'd like it to be easier again.

The NHL/NHLPA announcing a $25 million increase of the cap over the next three years was always going to be a problem, the top players up for a contract are now thinking they might be underpaid in 4 or 5 years.

Tough reality that fans in markets like Minnesota (this includes most Canadian teams). Players get to pick where they want to play when they get to a certain point. It happened to the Flames with Gaudreau/Tkachuk.
Kaprisov wants the Rangers most likely as they have a huge Russian community.

Friedman on the most recent 32 Thoughts:
"So for (Kaprizov) to say no convinces me of one thing: him or his representatives - and his agent is Paul Theophanus - they know something else is out there that's bigger. Now, for a deal to be bigger than 8 x 16 from the Wild, assuming this is not a sign-and-trade, there has to be somebody out there with a 7 x 19 or a 7 x 20. There's somebody out there who is sending up smoke signals saying "we can do better." That, to me, is the logical explanation."
...
"Somebody said to me "do you think he wants a shorter term deal?" No, I don't believe that. I mean, I could always be wrong - I've been wrong before - but I don't believe that. I think when you have the injury history Kirill Kaprizov has, I don't think you're interested in a short-term deal."

Friedman is as vanilla as they come, and when I heard him say that this morning it indicated to me that he was told something (ie: he knows the other teams who will offer more).

Yeah agree, he's hypersensitive to possibly burning bridges / sources.
For him to talk like this, he was practically CC'ed on the email with the offer.

Guerin's response this morning: https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/article/gueri...act-rejection/
Strong comments from the guy, as even if it is true that Kaprizov rejected the Wild's offer, Guerin is still wooing him publicly which might work out for them if they're still talking potential contract.
