I'd put it more in the comic book movie category. Superheroes seem to have more of a definitive archetype, whereas Sin City is kind of a comic book noir. There's definitely some grey areas. I'd almost say that V for Vendetta would also be scratched from the list, for the same reason. Is V a superhero, or a noir anti-hero?

Also, that Esquire list has a bit of that 'support our corporate overlords' vibe, to it.

Our potential list has Hellboy 2 but not Hellboy?

Infinity War for me,

Basically it was just an incredible feat, in essence doing justice to an ensemble cast with ~16 lead characters, containing 4 different story lines that intertwined with each other, and respecting around 30 hours of prior content that build to the climax of a 18 episode series. Then silence the theater as we cut to credits, ~100 people just sitting in disbelief wondering if they actually just watched that.

It is far and away the most ambitious project ever done in the genre.

Maybe slightly diminished by not the reversal of events, but the reversal of consequences in End Game. But that was telegraphed from the beginning and was always going to happen, so you can forgive them a bit for giving us the event, then returning the crew to the bridge for another adventure next week.

I've got to vote for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

That was my generation's Star Wars, our Marvel. That drawn out introductory scene with Shredder, where he's walking down the hallway in the foot clan hideout, the drums booming: probably my first magic of the movies moment.

I voted Dark Knight, to me it's contributions to the genre can't be ignored. I was too young for Batman 89 mania but the hype around this movie has never been topped for me.

I voted Across the Spider-Verse. To me it's the perfect comic book movie. Nearly every movie on the list has at least one drawback, or something you can nitpick. Spider-Verse is tremendous filmmaking. I suppose the only problem is it's not a complete story, but it's the most fun I've had in a movie in years. You could also argue many of these series aren't complete stories as well, as even Dark Knight and Infinity War end on cliffhangers.

Superman (the movie)

Christopher Reeve transforms himself just through posture and tone seamlessly from Clark Kent to Superman. Gene Hackman at his height as a villain. Well shot, exciting, moving, and great special effects for it's time.

Not to mention the music. Nothing has come close since to that iconic sound.

Hamlet, I mean the Lion King, wasn't even the best CBM that year, it came out months before Infinity War. Great movie in the midst of a historic run of great movies, but not even top 5 in MCU history, let alone #1 of all franchises all time. In a sense the accolades that it got were performative anti-racism rooted in its own form of biases.

*I did really like that movie, there is just no comparison to some of the best movies.

I went guardians. I love the movie, it captures everything thing I want in a comic book movie.

It also holds up in terms of impact on CBMs
James Gunn made people care about hero’s only a few new about and crafted a heart felt story. In terms of impact his house style was taken over my the MCU and now Gunn leads the DCU so in terms of historical impact it holds up well.

It kicked off peak superhero where the star and the character no longer mattered.

The bracket is a bit of a mess, but Infinity War should be the winner.

The Spider-Verse movies are brilliant and while the consensus seems to be Across the Verse is better I like Into the Verse more, they're both brilliant however.

Spider-Man Homecoming deserves to be in this conversation. Michael Keetan was brilliant and truly terrifying at times.

Yeah I tend to lean towards Into vs Across as well.

GotG I'd say is probably my favourite live action one. It's doubly impressive because I'd never read any of the comics but the movie made me care a lot about the characters which is the most important job that lots of movies seem to forget.

Now if The Incredibles had been in the list I'd have had a real hard time between that and Into.

If a show only has a plurality of the votes does it make sense to have a run off of the top two or three?

Superman, really? That was almost as corny as Adam West’s Batman.

Is Warriors a superhero movie? Certainly cartoonish.

BP is near the top of most top 50 lists and should be in the poll.

It should be in the pool, but shouldn't be getting many votes for 1 OA.
