I don't know if the full details have emerged but I would bet it would be as front loaded/bonus laden as possible and Marchand will just retire at 40. At that point the cats won't care about any recapture penalties. It's all about extending their window now which they absolutely have.

If it helps the Panthers get another Cup I'd say it's worth it. With addition of Bennett resigning, I like their chances for next season.

No one will care about paying Marchand into his 40's if they win another Cup or two.

The NHL absolutely must not address how fun and satisfying it is to make the Oilers cry in the next CBA. Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

It's somewhat surprising the length of these deals, if Zito is getting soft and not making some of the ruthless decisions he did to get the team built this way.
Or he's made promises behind the scenes he's now keeping.
The team really did to a man say how close they felt together, and it seemed more than cliche speak.
But, he's won back to back and even if they dont win another cup in the next 6-8 years, he's going to still be well regarded.

I'm...I'm speechless. Zito has just been remarkable since day 1 with the Panthers. Turned them into a dynasty overnight.
I know there will be a day where this hits home and the Panthers will age out of their window and have literally nothing in the cupboard, but that day is not today.
If nothing else, this keeps the Oilers' nemesis at full strength for the foreseeable future.
Just fantastic.

Don't know the answer to the first question offhand, but there is no cap penalty under the current CBA, because it's not a back-diving contract. He gets the same money every year of the deal, according to Capwages and Puckpedia. Most of it is in signing bonuses, but those are also equally divided among all six years of the deal. If he retires early, he loses money in the same proportion.

Things are going to be really interesting, someone is going to have to get squeezed out.
Maybe Lundell?

Nope. Lundell is also signed through 2030 and is a key part of the team.
If I had to guess, it'd be Luostarinen, only because of his age.
Which is a shame too because he is low key amazing, especially in the playoffs.

Wouldn't the bolded make him subject to the 35+ rule where even if he retired, his cap hit would remain in effect? Not a penalty per se in the way that recapture penalties are, but it's still dead space (unless they LTIR him).
Based on the 2020 MOU which updated the 2012 CBA, multi-year 35+ contracts remain on the books after retirement unless they meet 2 conditions:
1) Contract has the same or higher salary in each subsequent year of the contract (i.e. no front loading)
2) No signing bonuses beyond the first year of the contract.
#1 is met, but if he has signing bonuses beyond the first year then the Panthers are presumably stuck with his cap hit for 6 years, even if he retires.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be ERod. I don't think they want to break up that third line of Luostarinen-Lundell-Marchand.
