Yeah, Tavares gave up his cards a long time ago. He only wants to be in Toronto. Obviously he wasn't going to do it for league min and there was still a bottom line, but it's not like Treliving had to apply tough negotiating skills to get it done. It's like crediting the Pens GM for paying Crosby less than full market value on his last contract.

When's the last time a player took this steep a discount? The PA has to be a bit unhappy with this contract.

Good for JT and maybe it will set off a trend of true "hometown" discounts.

Tavares really had all the cards here. He said as much that he wanted to stick around. For Tre to lose both him and Marner together would have looked awful. I'd go a step further and say there was probably something else negotiated whereby Tavares will be given a management position upon retirement akin to Spezza. Tre had no choice but to play hardball here, but if Tavares wanted to he could've screwed him hard. Again, Leafs fans don't know how much he helped them here.

Yeah, you have to think JT has a decent idea that McLoser is open to signing in Toronto next year. No way he would take a steep discount without some insight on what's happening in the next year.

It's pretty clear that he didn't want to play anywhere else and he's already made a lot of money over his career. I kind of respect that he chose happiness over money.

$138.8M USD after this current contract.

Life aint changing if you make $138.8M or $150M but it will change if you get a Cup.

Tavares is at the "more important than money" part of his career.

I don't think the NHLPA has been that militant about stuff like that since the salary cap came in. They get their piece of the pie no matter what now. Even back then, they were more concerned with what the example setters were getting... the guys that would set the new norm, not really post-prime vets.

Think about the Leafs possible PP 1 unit. Nylander, McDavid, Matthews, Tavares, and Knies. How in F could you defend that?

That's BT Wizard money right there. Could have easily gotten another big UFA contract and been pretty highly sought after, even at his age. Obviously wants to stay and try to end the Leaf's cup drought (lol).

You can ask the Panthers how they did it.

Only 1 puck. Knies needs to prove more.

They will miss Marner.
