"Often outplayed" is probably the better term... at least in the games I saw. Reschny's line played head-to-head with Catton/Cristall line, and Reschny's line very much kept up and often controlled the play. He was clearly better than Catton when I was watching.
Cristall was also the noticeable difference maker on Catton's line as well, and I think the stats actually show that as 9 of Catton's 14 points were secondary assists (with the primary assist or goal usually going to Cristall).
I'm not really knocking Catton, as I think he's going to be a decent player, I just think that series showed Reschny could keep up with the big boys in junior on both sides of the puck--even though he's younger and didn't quite have the talent beside him.
He's my pick at 18... if he's there.
Out of thanks, but thanks for pointing this out.

Todd Button was at one of the playoff games I was at so they very much have interest. The knock I've heard in the 2025 draft thread on Reschny is that he can disappear at times. But I saw him play about 8 games this past year and I never noticed it.
Even during the first half of the year, before the Royals picked up Isogai and Boehm, and when Reschny wasn't wracking up the points, he was still significantly effective, with a high motor that was always on. His high level plays just died on the sticks of his teammates, until January when they picked up a couple better players that helped spread out the offence.
But I'm not a scout and I certainly have a blind eye towards weaknesses when I like a player!
I haven't watched much of Cootes, and I appreciate dissentower's concerns around his upside, but I'm wondering if Reschny and he are quite similar but that Reschny had the benefit of the Royals making big trades half way through the season, which gave Reschny more opportunities to finish. Cootes play on Team Canada this past May seemed to suggest that when he has high end support, he can wrack up the points as well.
I'd be happy with both... and happy with Kindel too. I just REALLY like Reschny (and he seems like a high character kid too).

I actually quite like Lakovic. His weak points are in areas that tend to be resolvable.
But it's hard to ignore Reschny's and Kindel's numbers. Kindel's style of transition may not work as well in the NHL. He plays better at center than at wing, but I don't think he necessarily translates as a center. Reshcny is more all-around, so I went with him.
Bear I like, but he's probably gone by then.
Cootes is quite all-around. He was in on about a third of his weak team's scoring. But he uses his size to succeed, and he doesn't have a lot of it. His point totals were underwhelming for a player of his size. Might project more as a middle six player. Mid-round 1sts are better spent on players with top 6 upside, with more ceiling.

I’m from the same town as Reschny and it’d be wild to see him in flames colours. His dad and uncle played for the Sr team in Macklin for a long time and he has their competitive side. Kid is gonna shine in post-season hockey.
Very much hoping they draft him but I know the bias is real. Because of his size and skating I could also see him sliding.
Gonna be a cool experience to watch his name get called wherever he lands.

Reschny over Cootes because of the oilers fandom. If Reschny started cheering for them with McDavid that’s not that surprising. Cootes is a Sherwood park kid who’s grown up around that stink

They're both Oilers fans....

I have no idea who any of these prospects are so I'm voting Lynden Lakovic based on best name.
I like the alliteration. I hate the spelling of Lynden with a Y but its unique and draws attention. Lakovic sounds vaguely east European so he maybe probably has deep hockey bloodlines.
Not a fan of Nesbitt. 18 is too rich. But, as with every draft, they tend to take who I'd rather not take. Last year it was Parekh, I wanted Helenius for Obvious reasons but I understand why Parekh was a no brainer.

People are going to be disappointed when the Flames take Nesbitt.
goes against the high ceiling that's been talked about. But I get the appeal with the positional need. Just think there's better prospects around that pick as things currently stand.

I'm a little encouraged by Button saying that they are prioritizing offensive upside with their 1st rounders. Nesbitt is a fine prospect, but I bet there are similarly ranked prospects with higher offensive potential when the Flames pick.

Couldn’t vote bear because I doubt he would be available at 18. I’m not enamoured by the centres probably available at 18. Won’t be popular but I picked a lw at 18. Let’s go Lakovic!!

Not a great selection to work with.
He also has some legendary Flames bloodlines!
Draft Lakovic and Nilson for the double dip!

Nesbitt put up 64 points in 65 regular season games, playing mostly 2C on the Spits. Then, he put up 10 points in 12 playoff games, with 30 PIM. The upside is there. One of his best qualities is his hockey sense.

i went Reschny,I think Bear is gone I would be ok with Cootes, but I think Reschny has higher ceiling and listening to Button today he was saying even though center is desired position Conroy says we still need to take bpa>
