To add to SuperMatt18's post - I also think while Lafreniere is a good player, he just isn't what you want in a 1st overall pick - a cornerstone franchise piece. They were unlucky to have bottomed-out during a period of relatively lower-quality top end talent, much like the Oilers did with their Hall, Yakupov and RNH years.
Overall, I don't fault the Rangers at all. They SHOULD be a terrific team now, but they fell apart. Drury has been a terrible GM.

I know we've heard the NHL discourages teams from making trades during this period blah blah.
We know NHL GM's are constantly bending the rules, negotiating extensions early, tampering etc.
You'd think there would be an advantage to using this time to better your club while others are focusing on their playoff runs and waiting to see how things play out for them.

Good question. I wouldn’t be surprised if part of it is an informal convention that teams don’t bother players for the first few weeks of their summer.

Honestly, I’m also not a fan of Fox defensively. He’s a good offensive player but he’s molded very much like Mike Green but maybe a bit better defensively. Not sure why he’s untouchable? They have a franchise goaltender and a franchise player with Panarin but a lot of second and third line players. They really needed some of those draft picks to hit as SuperMatt rightly pointed out. They’re in a weird fuzzy middle place. I think the jury is still out on Drury. He’s rightly becoming a lightning rod because he didn’t treat his players like humans, but hockey trade wise I don’t think he’s made terrible moves. Those guys are older and they needed youth.

But why hold off on announcements and formalizing transactions? Its not done til its submitted with the NHL.
I'd imagine it'd put pressure on the GM's of teams making deep runs in the playoffs. Almost a sense of missing out on the party if your team is still active.
Could cause panic moves later and be a true disadvantage of success.

In past seasons there have been deals like this on these off days between the Stanley Cup Finals games and around this time (mid series). There seems to be an unwritten rule about doing deals withing the first three rounds of the playoffs. But at this time of year when you have two days between games, the league should be looking for other ways to get attention. I get them not wanting deals announced on game days. But when you have two off days between games and no other real content...well that's the NHL just holding itself back.

Was Marky traded during the Finals? Wow I don't remember. I bet it wasn't on a game day though. That might be the threshold the league may from upon.

leaking this early puts pressure on Kreider camp to make his decision, and which one they Rangers want him to make.
Just like how Regehr's camp leaked the Sabres trade when they found out Feaster didn't approach other teams. So they wanted to see what the market was.

Now those vets are old and because they didn’t stick with a rebuild they have few prospects to make a run. It’s really a warning to us in many ways. I like Conroy but he can’t take the Burke approach even if we somehow hit a home run with a prospect. It requires some careful drafting with some adds here and there of some vets. Too many vets and by the time the run happens those old guys are aged.

It wasn’t Laf that accelerated things it was Panarin dropped in their laps

Bottomed out? They were a middle of the pack team, exact same points as the Flames, when they won the lottery.

Flames should have had 4-7 deals lined up and announced one 15 mins before each Oilers pregame so SN would have to mention us.

Delay is believed to be Kreider waiving his NTC which Anaheim is reportedly on. Kreider doing his due diligence, meeting with Ducks front office before signing off on trade. Kreider believed to be open to waiving his NTC for Ducks.
