Pursuing Tavares at a discount as he wants to still be with the team would be a huge win. He plays hard and smart. Having him on the second or third line would be great.

Bennett is the flavour of the month which fits with Treliving's MO. He has to have the hottest commodity of the year, at any cost. It sure sounded like that will be his target. Florida is the best place for him as he can play his game there. But to ask him to come Toronto and do the same thing would be a huge mistake. He'll be very liked until he colossally f's up with penalties. Florida's smart though and there's no chance they'd pay what's soon to be an inflated salary.

If this was true, don't you think that he'd have won a few more of those bidding wars?

With the Leafs he had to report to Shanahan and live through his plan. Look at Calgary and how he had to have Kadri and the cost it was to get rid of Monahan to do so. What about Hamonic and the double down there. Hamilton also cost him quite a bit. All those players were sudden big names at the time.

So were Bishop, Stone, Eichel, and how many other players he tried to acquire. He could have added six first round picks and offered a maximum contract to get Stone, for example, but he didn't.

Clearly, he was not bent on it at any cost.

Correct - at any cost is the wrong term but overpayment, definitely.

How was Hamilton a sudden big name?
I don’t get the criticism. These are good players. Are we criticizing a gm for trying to acquire good players?
I don’t know what is meant by “flavour of the month”

Fair enough. What I meant by flavour of the month is guys who suddenly become popular in the media. Hamilton was good but arguably the price was high at the time. Hamonic was not great but somehow there was a media frenzy around him and he was sold for a gem. Kadri was good too, but the term was crazy for a guy on the wrong side of the curve. He seemed to love being the centre of attention on winning the trade/signing for guys who happen to be in the media. Very Burke like. Anyway, just my opinion.

I'm skeptical that he'll want Bennett again but Bennett works in Florida because of their mix. Signing him to a premium will be terrible.

I think it’s fair to say Treliving has a history of paying a lot for recent performance.

Brouwer and Neal came off big playoff runs. Huberdeau came off a career season. The Gaudreau contract offer improved dramatically after a great season despite the club seeing his full body of work in Calgary.

He doesn’t seem to be too good at finding bargains, the way Zito did with Bennett in the first place.

When he did try, like with Lazar, he overpaid.
