It is much easier to get elite talent at the top of the draft, but there are always exceptions.

I would certainly trust these hockey experts opinions over a random Flames Homer on a message board. But again, these are opinions and one of the players could certainly surprise us.

The fact remains though that we need help at forward. We have next to no 1st line scoring talent at forward.

Many "experts" picked Nashville to win their div, Oilers to win the cup every year, ect.

People need to read up on Chesterton’s fence. It’s easy to look at something and proclaim what you can immediately do, but it requires some reflection to first understand what the other side is doing.

Without defining what a top line player is, that list can be interpreted a lot of ways.

Fundamentally I can't say I disagree too much with Scorp. I think Coronato can become a 35 goal scorer, and right now there's 41 guys in the NHL with 30 goals. So I think he's the one player who I think can be a top line guy 5 years out. But I'd be pretty surprised if he was a top in 30 points. So he's not a core foundational piece to me.

But at this point the team is potentially at 3 years out of the playoffs, and Parehk is exciting but Honzek to me is still a bit meh and this year its two picks at like 18-21 to add and no second of their own, so the one Avs this year. Wolf, Coronato, and Zary are from Trelivings time. So there's not much for centers and it's not like the team has 10 picks in the first two rounds in the next 2 years. So it's really not until next years draft that we really know if the team has added any other blue chippers to Parehk after what could be 4 years out of the playoffs. At that rate...it could be a 10 year project.

Ive been wrong lots, Im well over .500 though. I have certainly never picked the Oilers to win a cup like half the "experts" have done every year for the last 5.

I was a dilusional homer in the summer when I had the Flames at 90s in points..."Realists" had them bottom 5, any suggestion otherwise was scoffed at....probably the same this summer.

I agree that tanking further this year once the season already started isn't an option but they shouldn't change their long term plans now and the goal should still be getting younger and building through the draft which was the plan coming into the season.

In terms of not drafting top 10 historically...the franchise also has 1 cup in 52 seasons.

And 6 playoff series wins since 1989...so the strategy hasn't really worked for them.

Well they have 4 1sts the next 2 years but they arent tanking. Wolf is 24 they arent just gonna start thowing in the towel on seasons. Its a hybrid, like it or not. Flames will try and improve the team with players in their 20s not 30s and wont be trading 1sts unless its a young player with major upside.

Might not be everyones ideal plan but thats the plan...and its different from previous plans.
