But sometimes you need to make moves to address a weakness and manage your cap. Coronato and Zary are RFAs, we don't know the ask yet maybe the Flames haven talked it yet but if Zary or Coronato wants Cozens money and both are wingers, maybe you look into more than if the contract demand is less.

Teams are trading for Rantanen until they find out he wants $14 mil

I wonder if CGY walks in on Rantanen and sign him to what he wants. That's been a bubbling rumor for a week or so now.

No reason to do it now and give up assets when he will be a UFA in the summer.

I don't know that seems like as close of a even hockey deal as you will find.

I get the injury concerns for Norris, but he's a good hockey player nonetheless.

I think it is close on paper, but I would bet that Cozens turns around in Ottawa.

Norris just can't stay healthy and is more expensive. Docker has limited upside IMO. This is a win for Ottawa IF (and there is no guarantee here) Cozens turns his game around in Ottawa. I like this for Ottawa - shed a bit of cap, and I think they end up with the better player long-term.

I think it's a win for the sens regardless.

Even if Cozens is a 3rd line center atleast he should be a healthy asset.

Norris is just as expensive, older and hasn't had a healthy season in the NHL. Pretty sure he's coming off his 3rd surgery on the same shoulder. Good chance he has lots of injury time in his future.

Feels like a huge risk for the sabres and one we could of easily matched.

Makes me think Conroy wasn't willing to move a Sharky or Frost.
They would have traded sharky for him for sure

Is Norris having a much better year?

Norris: 20 goals and 33 points in 53 Games

Cozens: 11 goals and 31 in 61 games

That's pretty close, but when you look at 5v5

Norris: 12 points in 53 games
Cozens: 25 points in 61 games

Norris has been very powerplay dependant this year, and he won't be on that same unit in Buffalo

If they really wanted to... that extra year could shave the AAV down.

These numbers make me a bit sick but as an exercise:

15m x 7 years vs 13m x 8 years

What's the 2m in cap space worth to the team? What's the extra year worth to Rantanen?

Under it all is the cost to get him now... the rumored cost from the Leafs is high as is giving up someone like Stankoven ++

Ultimately, it may make sense for those teams, but why would we part with... say Coronato, Bru, Honzek + 1st when we're not even competitive?

Told you Cozens didn't have crazy value haha. Zary swap would have gotten it done. Will be interesting to see if Cozens breaks out in Ottawa

I'm not as much fussed about 5x5 versus PP production. They all count. And we all bemoan a poor powerplay. I don't think 20 v 11 goals is close and I think similar points but in 8 less games is also favorable. Plus There's the otehr side of the puck and Cozens is really bad defensively.

Is the PP production sustainable on a new team or is it more that he gets to play with Tkachuk and Stutzle

Well, Cozens didn't even make the 1st unit in Buffalo so it's a tough comparison. If Norris ousts Quinn (who is injured now anyway) and plays with Thompson, Dahlin, and Tuch, sure he can maintain that. Maybe he actually improves their PP.

At the end of the day, it's not so much that Norris is way better. Their career numbners are similar and Norris does have the injury issue. It's that I don't get the Cozens hype. I think it's draft related.

Basically it is a cap dump for a cap dump. Docker has no value and they were talking about how he has no value on sports radio in Ottawa last week. Not surprising that Buffalo could not get much for Cozens. Any talk of serious assets being moved out for him was pie in the sky. Ottawa saves about 850K a year on the cap.
