I feel slightly embarrassed to ask this, but I'm going to anyway.

Is there a mobile experience for this forum? Tapatalk has become essentially useless and I think a big part of it is how it loads ads. I like the tapatalk experience but it's so completely terrible that I'm looking for anything else. Loading the desktop website on mobile isn't great either but at least it loads.

Calgarypuck is running vBulletin 3 which was released in 2004. Unless you're trying to view The Girls of the Redmile on your RAZR V3 you might find a mobile version difficult in 2025.

I found with Firefox and Ublock on mobile I can block the top bar an side bar and be left with just the forum. Then it's readable and fast.

The MelBridgman character, and the ads showed up at the same time. This has to be by design, as a way to control our brain meat.

Hey. Hey. I'm just asking questions.

If you select "Hide Distracting Items" in Safari, and select the annoying ad, it goes away (in Safari on iPhone) and doesn't come back for that browsing session (I use Private Browsing by default.)

I use an iPhone to look at CP in general

Seems lately, the ads are appearing and the page shifts position as they are getting themselves sorted, sometimes resizes if I’ve zoomed in.
The ads expand / get bigger at times and occupy a big chunk of the screen, and are a nuisance to get rid of, but mainly it’s the experience of the page

I tried using a popup blocker, Blockbear, but it doesn’t seem to address whatever is going on

Anyone else encountering this? Seems recent and it is annoying enough to ask about it. Suggestions?
Download the browser DuckDuckGo - completely solved the issue for me.

The ads on my phone are awful on this site. They are now about 3/4 of the screen. It's to the point where I don't read CP as much and maybe that is the intent.

On one hand, it is not an inexpensive endeavour to run a site that gets this much traffic and consumes the bandwidth that it does. Sponsored forums only bring in so much revenue, with ads making up the rest -- which isn't likely much. Ad revenue isn't terribly lucative just through impressions (views), it's usually click-through and affilitate links (ie: adverts for an item to purchase on Amazon and the user clicks and follows through with buying it) that gets the better revenue. When it comes to pay per impression, the more aggressive and obnoxious the advertising you permit on the site, the more money the advertiser will pay you for the privilege to badger your less tech-savvy users who haven't figured out ad-blocking.

On the other hand, plenty of sites have adopted a model whereby you can become an ongoing sponsor and buy a membership -- usually something like $5 a month -- which gives you additional perks, like most or all of the ads being removed, special forum access, additional features like being able to set your own custom user title, animated GIFs in avatars, etc. Given that this site is run on a version of vBulletin so old that it can drink in the United States, the likelihood of this happening is probably a long-shot. Unless it is something that completely breaks the forum, I think the effort going into the forum is merely for the purposes of KTLO. That's not entirely a good or a bad thing on its own if the product fills all the needs it sets out to, but it's not great when there are aspects of the user experience suffering for it.

I would guess there's two things going on:
1. this site isn't a full-time job for the owner but a hobby that happens to generate revenue, so it's not a priority.
2. site ownership has made a judgement call that annoying and intrusive ads that border on site-breaking for native mobile browsers aren't bad enough to invest the time in fixing it (ie: use Tapatalk), nor is it enough of a detractor that keeping those problem ads in place risks decimating page views and unique visitors, so there's no pressing need to disable the problem ads and sacrifice the revenue they bring in.

I would imagine that charging a subscription would be a pain in the arse to manage and would change the accounting side of the equation a whole bunch. But I'd definitely subscribe.

If Bingo asked us all to pitch in a few bucks in a fundraiser to keep the site going, most of us would. This site is unique in that we just want a place to banter during the workday. Average user tenure is probably 10-15 years, we ain't going anywhere.

A subscription isn't necessary. Just do an annual fundraiser.

I'm at 21 years.... does that mean I'm above or below average?

I suggested this probably 10 years ago, sell banners to local businesses in Calgary, the views, the activity of the forum would bring in far more than adsense and also promote businesses in Calgary.

Takes more work sure, but in the long run will bring in more revenue.
