I wonder if people just threaten to Venmo athletes in Instagram DM's or something and the story got twisted, otherwise yeah I don't think you can do it without a proper email.
I don't know why the term 'sort code' sounds precisely British, but it does.

I don't know why we would be expected to know that until we try to rent a car in the USA having explicitly asked if we can pay with our debit card because we just switched banks and haven't gotten our new credit cards yet only to be told when we arrive that what we have is an "ATM card" and not a debit card because in the USA a debit card is actually just a pre-paid credit card.

Canada is switching to this model - Using Debit card rails vs interac rails for card processing. They may all already be done now.

That's why is the past you had issues - DC's in Canada historically used Interac rails. Now most ATM's (at least the software /payment partners they use) now all have interac integrated so it's not usually an issue anymore at ATMs, but POS systems usually wont be integrated into Interac

I use Venmo, PayPal, Zelle in the US and Interac in Canada and I prefer the Venmo approach over Interac.

The tech behind Venmo and PayPal seems to be much better than Interac. Interac seems to take at least 30 minutes to transfer money where as all the transfer apps in the US are instant. And for a long time, Interac transfer cost a couple bucks (I think it used to be $2 per transfer) where as Venmo has been offering free transfer between friends and family for a long time.

Venmo and PayPal are 3rd party apps so you don't need the bank to support transfers through these apps. Zelle is integrated to the banking apps so that is closer to Interac.

On Venmo, you can search for people by name or username so if the players didn't set their account to private, you could potentially find them on the app.

Interac depends on the bank. WS it's instant. CIBC it's 30 mins for larger money moves.

Interac has always been instant for me. Also been free for me always as a perk of my account.

I've exchanged emails with Kevin Cheveldayoff over the years. Not a lot, probably about three or four. It's not hard to get people's emails. The trick is to be able to get a response.
