If you have a chance to lock up what you believe is a cornerstone player, just lock them up. Don't play this bridge deal game. Worry about eight years, in eight years

It also depends on the player. They may not want an 8 year deal, due to their age when the contract ends. They may not want their third contract beginning in their 30's. Unless they are an elite player.
The Tkachuk situation was likely that Tkachuk would only take an 8 year deal or a short term deal. In that case, an 8 year deal was obviously the best choice.

Of course it depends on the player.

If he keeps this level of play then I would probably try to lock him up for Weegar's contract( 8 x $6.25M ) this summer.
If he keeps playing with a .920 sv% next year as well, then I would probably try to sign him for up to 8 x $8.5M.
If he wins the Calder, and the Vezina in that time period then I could be convinced to go up to $10M, especially with how much the cap is going to rise in the next few years.
If he asks for more than that then I would look into making a trade.

Dollars are a little high IMO but can’t argue with your logic.

Yeah, lock him up. Wolf has shown he's much better than average and that he can cut it in the NHL. And I don't think he'll be able to command a crazy number given he'll only have the 2 years of history to use, so the chances of the contract coming back to bite the Flames is low unless he completely falls off the map.

Agreed but unless it is a fairly team friendly cap hit there is no rush to extend immediately on July 1st when we have another year on the contract before he is RFA. Agree though this should be an 8 year extension if the the team believes he is a cornerstone piece

Wolf has been so consistent at every other level of hockey, I feel that if he can show a full season of consistency at the NHL level, he's the real deal. Particularly, when playing behind a not so deep current Flames defence.
If he finishes the season, playing the way he is, you lock him for the full 8 years. If he'll take $6ish million, you take that and run. Rising cap, plus you deal with one of the greatest worries a rebuilding team can have.

Whatever it takes to lock him up.
MUCH easier to get a cheap backup goalie when you’ve got your #1 locked up for a long time. Lots of contending teams have trouble in the playoffs because they don’t have that one player (the goalie) that can steal you a key game or two in a playoff series.
Wolf is trending as our new franchise player. At one point we had a Kipper/Iggy Era, then a Gaudreau/Tkachuk era, now begins the Wolf/(hopefully another franchise or two) era.

Classic CP. This guy is having a good start, but let's see how he looks this time next season.

This isn't random, he has been a star at every level he has played at.
If it was a random hot streak but a player who has been streaky, sure.

I agree that its not completely random, but there are guys who have excelled at every level until they hit the NHL.
But Wolf has excelled in a big way at every level and he's doing it now in the NHL.
While he could start to fail, as goalies are voodoo, this does not seem random. And I've frequently questioned his size many times.
But we have the season to see if he can keep this level up.
Another factor in his favour is Calgary is not some team with elite players who are suppressing high danger chances. More likely just the opposite.

He is pretty much the only reason we have the record we do.
Calgary is the most pedestrian team in hockey in terms of low event hockey.
I am not saying sign him right away, just saying he is likely going to be a really good player.

It's a fair comment, I think, but for me, it's different with Wolf because of what we've seen happen around the league now and in Calgary with Chucky. Calgary is not a team most players will choose to stay on when they have leverage. It is what it is. Success will change that and the new arena will also help with that. For me, if and when the Flames happen to get a homegrown and developed prospect that is starting to really look like they will be the real deal, the best option is for the Flames to lock them up early. Shorter term deals because they're worried the player may not be the real deal will bite them ala Tkachuk if they do turn into the real deal since at that time, they will have all the power and yes, even if they are RFAs like Tkachuk was, can request a trade out and the Flames will be best to facilitate the trade.
I'm not supportive of the Flames doing this for every prospect when they show a bit of success, but if management believes the prospect is tracking to be an above average player at their position, just do it.

I think the more "classic CP" element is that you have the same putzes in this thread hollering and replying to people in aggravation defending the idea of signing wolf to a big contract on one season, then saying in the trade rumors thread that Cozens is horrifically overpaid and worthless based on earning the contract for one season of play.
It's... ridiculous and clownish.

I think Wolf will likely be looking for around 5-6 years.
He will be 25 when this new contract kicks in. 8 years would take him to 33 years old...which is about the age when goalies aren't going to get another big contract.
I think he will want to be in line to get another pay day at 30-31 years old...which means a 5 or 6 year deal is likely what he's looking for.
Ideally the Flames would be able to lock him up for 8 but his agent probably will have other plans.
