I remember Teemu Selanne once discussed how significant time off from the game revitalized his career. Injuries healed, his health improved and he came back strong and motivated.
It can happen.
Granted, times change and your mileage may vary but as the old saying goes:

wasn't really injury related (and the back story is definitely complicated) but Carl Brewer certainly had a wild career with a few shorter layoffs but then the last one was really prolonged before he all of a sudden showed up in his 40s for the 79 Leafs
