I predicted Mantha would be the whipping boy this year from when he was signed. Have never been a fan, almost always comes across as lazy & disinterested. He'll have the occasional spurt showing potential but it doesn't last.

I just hope he somehow puts up enough points we at least can flip him for a late pick at the deadline to someone who sees something in him / wants some depth.

But that said if he were to spend most of the season eating popcorn because guys like Coronato just plain outwork him I'm totally fine with that too.

Prior to the season starting, I was fully convinced that Rooney was a favorite of the coaching staff and that he'd almost always win out if there was a battle for a roster spot, but my assumption was clearly so very wrong, as I think that's twice now this season when he's been the one that ends up sitting in favor of someone else in that bottom line center role.

The fact he's even collecting an NHL paycheck highlights that he's a clear favorite of Huska's. As a result of that we lost a 23 year old right handed center who has 3 points in 8 games on a good team, and is 60% in the faceoff circle for nothing. It happens in every industry, I get that, but it astounds me that after nearly 300 NHL games this guy is still getting NHL reps let alone taking jobs from younger talent.

Keeping Hanley up was the reason they lost Schwindt.

You could technically say that any one of Rooney, Barrie, or Hanley took his "roster spot" but only one of them was kept to play the 4th line C duties, and it wasn't the two defensemen.

Schwindt is a pretty vanilla prospect.

Rooney was #1 in short handed time per game for forwards last year, and is clearly a pretty popular teammate.

He's been better than what they've had in his role.

Maybe now with Kirkland they are thinking someone is finally more suited.

Schwindt is nothing special...but I would say a RH shot center that can potentially take an important strong side faceoff for this team would provide more value than both Hanley or Barrie provide right now.

right this second but with an injury or two on D maybe not...

there is a case to be made Rooney should have been sent down but camp performance has to mean something.

Either way its not a huge deal..

If I told you guys the Flames would be a .611 Hockey Club on October 30th you guys would call me a big fat liar. Now here we are and we are nitpicking 4th liner and 7th/8th dman moves.

I'm not going to worry about losing Schwindt. He is a tweener/nothing special 4th liner.

His RHS is the only thing that gives him slightly more perceived value. I really don't know why we are talking about him so much truthfully.

think back to the end of training camp. What would the reaction have been if the Flames waived Hanley, but instead of protecting Pelletier, they protected Schwindt?

No one here gave a damn that Schwindt was waived or claimed.

Calgarypuck doesn't need a .611 record or a .311 record to hammer the fourth line or third pairing veteran in favour of uncooked youth.

The Dustin Boyd Complex!

Schwindt may very well carve out a role in Vegas, but at best he is likely a dime-a-dozen player not worth losing any sleep over.

As someone who always thought Schwindlt looked OK in his NHL games I think it's funny that people are now acting like he was a big loss. There was zero interest in him on this board in the past two years.

I thought there were a couple of people that were pissed about it.

Regardless he wasn't going to move the needle one way or another on this team.
