Last 3 drafts?
Well, I'd discount 2024 right off the bat. That's 3 of the 7.
From 2023, Bedard has played. The other is still in college.
And from 2022, Korchinski played all last season, and Nazar was in college and played a few games at the end of the season.
For the most part, those 7 1st round picks are all considered solid prospects.
Prospects take a long time to develop. Anyone that things that Calgary's draft picks over the next few years will be taking Calgary to the promised lands quickly is likely to be disappointed.
I don't think anyone in Chicago is disapponted with their progress.

I'm not setting fire to the rebuild yet, I just have some reservations about when they will start to move out of rebuilding mode at this current point in time.
They need another real stud piece. It's personal opinion but I'm iffy on Levshunov. I'd like to see more of him before putting him in that high end tier with Bedard as far as prospects go.

Culture wise, and the vets are a lot better than what Chicago is stockpiling. Even trade value, I think we have better chips to trade for better returns.

Tons of runway and the team is still young but they stripped the team almost entirely of talent and they don't seem to have a ton of high end hits just yet.

Not a perfect ranking but the formatting is so good I keep coming back to it.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/561...brini-michkov/
With Bedard graduating they have a Tier 2 in Levshunov (4th overall though). Two tier 4s, 2 tier 6s.
Calgary with a Tier 2 in Parekh, 1 tier 4, 1 tier 6. (Honzek didn't make the list)
So even ignoring Bedard they're still ahead of us. Plus they have Bedard

How and when a team comes out of a rebuild may be as equally important as the start and early accumulation of assets to its success.

Until prospects prove they can perform at the NHL level, with consistency, judgement must be withheld. That is one of the reasons I have complained about the 'Hawk roster being loaded with guys at the end of their careers. I'd rather see us take our lumps and evaluate our young talent against NHL competition. Success with a bunch of guys 35yo+ proves little, is unsustainable, and is unlikely, anyways.
My point is that is impossible to compare rebuilds based on "prospects" with college, junior, or minor league competition.

Flames just need centers and I think their retool is near completed. The trick is after, not to spend draft capital on the Tavis Harmonics of the world. They have to keep churning the draft system for a decade. That's how you build a sustainable foundation. That's where the greater success comes from. Drafting consistently is the foundation that Canadian teams just cannot seem to maintain because of pressure from ownership and the fanbase.
Much like the early performance of this year's roster, Flames just need to stick to it.

Chicago has made no attempt to stockpile vets. They traded them all away already. That's how they got Bedard.

Unless I missed some games, last year the Flames completed their first 3-game win streak by game #33 (Dec 21st). If they win tonight, their first 4-game win streak last year ended game #52 (Feb. 10th).

The Flames rebuild has only begun. Characterizing it as a retool is how Calgary finished middle of the pack for so long.

Oh yeah, they should absolutely be ahead of us since they had two extra years to stockpile young talent and assets.
To me, the Flames need to build up high end talent in the 18-22 year old range and the 22-26 year old range.
That should be who you're ready to offer long term deals and money too.
It's harsh and I'm painting with broad strokes here but anyone 27 and older shouldn't be looked at as a part of the contention window. They should be played in key roles to increase their value then sold off as their contracts expire, with the idea that the elite talent you acquire at the top of the draft can develop and replace these aging players in the next 4-6 years.

Don’t forget about Sharongovich. He’s no slouch.

I keep forgetting that the Flames's leading goal-scorer has yet to play a game. That makes this start even better.

Excuse me, but the Calgary Flames got the best defenseman of the 2024 draft.

every line has the ability to dominate and they all have at times. That was the key against the Oilers IMO.

I would imagine that Honzek will get sent down once Sharagovich is back, provided he doesn't pop off in the next few games.

From the 2022/23 season there are only 7 players left from the start of that season. Out of those 7 I don’t see many of them leaving mainly due to their contracts or in Backlund’s case because I think he will retire a Flame.
You could argue Vladar and Andersson but both are 27 and arguably our best goalie and dman. They aren’t that old and have been developed more or less in house. I bet they aren’t leaving. At least not right away. Unless the demand a trade.
Backlund 35
Coleman 32
Weegar 30
Huberdeau 31
Andersson 27
Kadri 34
Vladar 27
If you go back one more season there are 4
Backlund
Coleman
Andersson
Vladar
That’s a lot of turnover if you ask me.
I think the guys who might leave at the deadline if we are out of the playoffs are guys like Mantha, Hanley and Barrie who are essentially placeholders until our younger D prospects and guys like Coronato are ready to step in.
It will be interesting to see how this season plays out. I really think the Flames are going to do better than everyone thinks. I don’t think they should pick up any vets. But I also have a feeling they won’t be dumping any outside of Mantha or Barrie. My guess is if Huberdeau takes off that Mantha gets resigned.
