I would waive Hanley go with 7 D and keep Pelletier. Hanley was waiver fodder anyways and there are a few D in the AHL that can be called up to replace him if needed.
Hope they give Honzek a good chunk of games to see how he does. I think he deserves an extended look.

wonder if Hanley is being kept partly to hedge if Barrie doesn't sign (I think he will but is there a sense that there is someone- maybe even the Oilers- still sniffing around?)

I would just release Barrie. He technically doesn’t have a contract. I have a feeling that’s not going to happen though.

Based on projected lineup for opening night - how many players were on last years opening night roster that are also on this years?
6? 7?

If Barrie wasn't going to sign they wouldn't have him on the 2nd PP unit.

I think you need to keep one of the young kids around to bounce him out of the line-up when he floats. Because inevitably he'll float. He's already missing from the PP units.

What’s the biggest return we could expect for Barrie at the TDL? Even if he has an above average year in his production, I doubt he returns much more than a 3rd round pick. I guess it’s an asset but have to way the opportunity cost for another player whose spot he takes on this year.

Thought they were trying to give opportunity to and develop young guys. Is Barrie young?

These things aren't nearly as binary as you seem to want them to be.

I think a 3rd is a stretch. 4th at best.

Waaaay too much is made of opening night roster.
It matters for salary cap most of all.
Flames are a team in transition and having the wranglers in the same building lets the flames move players up and down and into and out of the lineup.
Flames timeline isn’t this year.

They seem pretty confident with Pospisil at center. Considering Zary and Sharangovich are options they must be seeing something

Sharangovich is not C, that experiment needs to end. He is a winger.

Barrie is filler while younger guys develop in the AHL. Just because they looked decent in the pre-season doesn't mean the best thing for them is to be in the NHL. You will need to get ready to be patient. You were ready to bump Zary in favour of Honzek which makes no sense.

This would be my bet. Barrie can provide offense and PP time which Hanley cannot. Honestly, is Hanley any better than Tinordi? But outside of sitting in the press box I am not sure what either Barrie or Hanley provide.

Yeah and a guy like Bru will get more minutes in the A instead of <10 min a night in sheltered play
I'm ok with that let them cook and get a free pick from Barrie at TDL

He will QB the PP as well. He would be sitting on the bench here. Same with Honzek. These guys needs minutes, especially Honzek. 8 minutes or being a healthy scratch does nothing for their development.
Developing prospects doesn't mean forcing them into the NHL in roles they are not suited for.
