Well, I like seeing that he's pretty much unanimously a top 5 talent in franchise history, generally in the upper portion of that, and with no major arguing either, just minor difference in opinion over largely the same group of players. For all the bickering we tend to do on this forum over the silliest things at times, it's nice to see a fairly strong consensus on Johnny.

I dont give a crap about who the first team to play is.

But when the NHL drops the first puck I want Guy Gaudreau to drop it.

And then kick the ass hole who killed his sons right straight in the balls at center-ice.

Since he's in jail, doubtful.

Mob rule? Isn't the first faceoff in Czechia? Either way, I'll be watching.

I think he would have set records if he had his head on straight. Kid had speed, moves, a great shot and grit. His point totals in the dead puck era were awesome and he was a fit in the Olympics.

Fleury had his warts though, a lot of romanticism about his skill going on in here. He was no doubt intensely skilled, but much in the same way as Johnny hockey. More speed and slightly less hands. I'd say Johnny has him on passing and pure dekeing ability, but Fleury had that hard nose bad area play.

I still give the edge to Johnny in pure skill!

Nilsson #1 because some of his reported feats just seem unrealistic. This is one of the only players older than Gretzky who Gretzky thinks is better than him- he says it frequently about younger players (remebmer Turris? LOL) but very rarely or never about players older than him. Except this dude.

Johnny #2. 2021-22 was potentially the best statistical season ever by a flames player. I would wager that era adjustment has him close to or above the point total that Nilsson maxed out at.

Beleive me, I'm not nostalgic or romanticizing that a-hole. But for a time I had him on a level with Sakic and Lindros.

Kenta is what happens when you put all your points into skill while ignoring heart and grit.

I did back of napkin using this adjusted stats formula, and Johnny absolutely pumps Nilsson in an adjusted point basis. Maybe I did something wrong but Johnny comes out with absolutely insane era adjusted numbers during his 115 point season.

Comparison (original, era-adjusted)
Nilsson, 1980-81: 131pts, 101pts
Gaudreau, 2021-22: 115pts, 111pts

Edit: Iginla, 2001-02: 96pts, 110pts

If we are talking just skill, then I think Phil Housley merits consideration for top 5.

Idon't know how the adjustments work, but Nilsson's big year had Gretzky skewing the averages with 164 points. Nilssons 131 was way more than the next guy (Bossy) at 119. And Jarome finished 1st the league.

Era adjusted doesn't care about any of that. It just determines the value of a point scored in any era. Doesn't matter that Iggy was first in 02 and Nilsson was only 4th (?) in 81. It just says that a point scored in 02 is worth more than a point scored in 81 (and in 21 too). It's just a way of normalizing point totals across all eras, regardless anything else.

Like, there might be various reasons why a point scored in 1981 is worth considerably less than one scored in 2002, but that's for other stats to help figure out.

Quote:
In order to account for different schedule lengths, roster sizes, and scoring environments, some statistics have been adjusted. All statistics have been adjusted to an 82-game schedule with a maximum roster size of 18 skaters and league averages of 6 goals per game and 1.67 assists per goal.
