Sure, but there are only really three paths to getting a good goalie: having a highly touted prospect who hits (the Price); signing a UFA goalie and hoping he maintains his form for as long as possible (the Markstrom) or having a guy come out of nowhere and suddenly be good (the Lundqvist).
Most of the top goalies come from path A.

Canucks are in okay shape to be honest. They have all their future 1st rounders and are only missing their 2027 2nd round pick.
Their core isn't that old and is pretty good at all positions:
Forward:
Pettersson - 25
Miller - 31
Boeser - 27
DeBrusk - 27
Defense:
Hughes - 24
Hronek- 26
Goalie:
Demko - 28
Silovs - 23
They also have Willander, Lekkerimaki, and Raty as pretty good prospects, but their prospect pool isn't that deep.
Not the best and some mistakes that previous management made are hurting them (moving 1st for OEL/Garland, buying out OEL) but they should be a comfortable playoff team for the next couple years for sure.

They just need a journeyman backup. Silovs looked like a starter in the playoffs to me, though that's a short sample size. Maybe they even claim someone off waivers as teams are trying to send their players down for the opening night roster deadline whatchamacallit. Unless Demko is not coming back at all - or at least expected to miss a significant amount of the regular season, I would just grab a guy through waivers.

After 20 or 30 shots whats he got left? Plus...the ice crew has to leave the LEGO blocks on the ice, they cant shovel them away!
I dont know what it'd be like to skate into a LEGO block....but I doubt it'd be good!

Plus the sponsorship would likely be pretty lucrative. I think LEGO Corp makes a fair bit of cash.

I’d just build a wall of lego across the goal and play with 6 skaters. Save the goalie cap space.

If Silovs is waiver exempt I could totally see Vladar as an option. Don’t think it would break the bank for Vancouver either.

The Canucks will only go as far as Demko takes them. If he’s injured at the start of the season, they’re out of the playoffs by US Thanksgiving.

People need to forget about dumping Vladar on some team
He’s been one of the worse goalies in the league the last two seasons.
To the extent that has been injury related, fine, but he’ll need to prove himself healthy and productive over a number of games before anyone would have any interest in him.
And if he does that, Calgary likely has a big need for him as much as anyone.

Did Lankinen sign with anyone? He would be the first guy I'd target as a short term solution.
I thought he was pretty good in NSH over the last 2 years.

He's still available and would be a good pickup.

Just remember....You heard it here first.
I've also been workshopping a gradual decline in goaltender equipment size.
1st Period you can go out there like the Michelin Man.
2nd Period you get smaller pads and a smaller catching glove and just a regular player's stick.
3rd Period? You get even smaller pads, an MLB catcher's mitt, one skate, no blocker only one of those circular things that were designed in the 90s to catch tennis balls using velcro and half of your mask covered in duct tape.
Then we start taking away the water bottle.
OT? Thats where things get grim and you dont even want to hear about the shootout!
The shootout is essentially a War Crime.

I would hate to hear the colour commentary in the shoot out. Makes me think about Seinfield and shrinkage.

No colour commentary necessary sir...the Goaltenders are mic'ed up for full fan value.
Put it this way...I dont think my name is in the running for Director of Player Safety or chief of the Goaltender's Union.
Once I brought out my plans for the shootout...lets just say that I might be on a List...and not a good one.

Not sure if mentioned anywhere. Putting it here because it has to do with Vancouver goaltending
Goalie coach Ian Clark has asked to step in to an off ice role. I believe it may be related to a shoulder injury
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/canucks...w-role/sn-amp/
Quote:
“When Ian approached me to say that he needed to make a change in his role to transition off the ice, we quickly went to work to find a solution,” said general manager Patrik Allvin in a statement from the team.
“With Clarkie wanting something different at the hockey club, we were extremely fortunate to have Marko in the system and ready to take on the responsibility of becoming our new goaltending coach in Vancouver. Unfortunately, Ian can no longer go on the ice regularly to do the things that have made him successful. But this new role will fit with his expertise and having Clarkie going out to find and develop talent will be a big asset to the organization.”

Welp, not trending in the right direction, that's for sure: https://vancouversun.com/sports/hock...ng-camp-report
Quote:
Wednesday morning on Sportsnet 650, InGoal Magazine’s Kevin Woodley echoed what has been whispered behind the scenes but no one has been able to confirm, that the Vancouver Canucks’ No. 1 goalie may have had some sort of surgical procedure done at some point this summer.
But more crucially, Woodley indicated he doesn’t expect Demko will be ready to start training camp in a month’s time in Penticton.
|
Official line is that its all a-ok still, but seems like there's a lot of smoke...
Quote:
Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre later reported on X that the team “officially still expects Thatcher Demko to be ready for regular season.” But it’s hard to get any answers out of the team’s braintrust right now on what they might be thinking about the status of Demko, who hurt his knee early in the playoffs and never returned — though he appeared nearly ready to return to action when the Canucks were eliminated in the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers.

There's smoke that something happened. Not smoke that he won't be ready to start the season.
It is what it is at this point. It does sounds like the Canucks are going to sign Lankinen.

Has never had the physical or mental capacity to be a #1 goalie in the NHL. A whopping 64 games in the 2021-2022 ruined him. Suck it Canucks.
