This is pretty neat.

Quote:
Chance encounter led to the discovery of a never-before-seen Babe Ruth rookie card that could go for millions at auction
Quote:
“The guy mentioned that he had some old baseball cards that were passed down from his dad, and my antenna went up,” said Gross, who offered to help the man figure out what they might be worth. Soon, the man — who is choosing to remain anonymous because of what’s coming next — started cataloging the cards and sending Gross spreadsheets containing some exciting names like Cy Young, Christy Mathewson, Jim Thorpe, and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.

Gross informed him he had some valuable cards, and they were planning to meet and go over them when the man sent Gross a casual text saying he had discovered some more cards in a box. He then wrote five words that have since sent the baseball memorabilia world into a frenzy: “Just found a Babe Ruth.”

For it was not just any Babe Ruth. The Danvers man had a 1916 rookie card for a young Red Sox pitcher who would become — after a disastrous sale, for the Sox at least, to the New York Yankees — the most famous player in baseball history. And this particular card, which was issued as part of a promotion by the Morehouse Baking Company in Lawrence, is so rare that Gross had to enlist several experts to figure out what it might be worth, because no one had ever seen one before, and it had certainly never come up for auction.

I thought the bump was related to the Paul Skenes 1 of 1 rookie card. Pretty insane bounty if you are a Pirates fan and give it to the organization. Imagine the card will be worth even more at auction.

That is also cool. Unless it’s a Pirates fan that pulls the card, I’d bet it’s going to the highest bidder. Even then, I’d probably give them right of first refusal with a modified offer. Like a nice trip to a game, meet and greet with the team and a big sack of cash.

This right here. In the midst of Covid decided it was time to get all those 80's cards I never got. Not to sell, not as an investment. Just for me to have and read and flip through.

"now THERE was a guy!"

So I did. One year at a time, mostly off Ebay, did sniping on auctions when I suspected a deal could be had. Picked up full sets from 1980-1989 over the course of the year (mostly Topps, but OPC from the years Topps didn't make any). Put them in plastic sheets, put the sheets in leather bound binders, and stacked them behind me like legal books.

Every now and again someone from Gen X whom I respect comes by and I let them have a snoop.

"Woah, Ray Bourque Rookie Card! Sweet condition too!"

It's fun.

No interest in newer or older cards. Just the players I was into as a kid.

One of the cool things though is you can get newer auto cards of your childhood favourites
I think my most prized cards are my Kipper auto, Regehr auto, Iggy auto and two Loob autos. I picked them all up in the last 3 months.
And I even stumbled across a Hrdina auto which I snatched up. The thing is even graded (who would grade a Hrdina card?!?!?)
If a fun hobby when you pick the thing you care about
Lately I’ve been focused on UD canvas cards not because they have a value but because they have the best photography

Nice find! One of my little collections is autographed cards of the 1989 Flames. I've got most of the team but Hrdina is one that I'm missing. Of the guys who played in the playoffs it's him, Ric Nattress, Sergei Priakin and Ken Sabourin.

There are a a few in-person signed Nattress cards on Ebay so at some point I'll probably settle for one of those - I've seen one certified auto appear but missed out on it.

How much do you think that card would sell for at auction? I think the tickets alone probably have a present value of like $500k USD, maybe a bit less.

The other stuff is harder to value, but I'd love to take batting practice with an MLB team and would straight up pay thousands to do so.

Is that card really worth more than 500k cash?

Heard all the commotion that someone in Calgary pulled one of those rare Connor Bedard 1/1 cards.

I don't collect anymore but whispers of it being valued at $250k. Anyone hear the rumblings as well?

Yeah, I saw that

Is it actually worth $250k? That's a lucky pull!

Wouldn't surprise me if that Bedard 1/1 went for $1 million. That's the bounty on his gold young guns 1/1 but this is autographed and has a real nice patch.

I'm currently working on getting every Flames Future Watch card (non auto, auto and auto patches). Have 23/25 non autos, 35/42 autos (all but the 7 autos from the mos recent set which has very inflated prices) and 21/36 patches. Patches are a bit pricey too...

So is this card worth more?

Pretty cool to see that pull in our city. I've talked to the guy that runs Overtime a lot - he's a good guy and I'm really happy for him.
Too bad they didn't record it. He records a lot of his rips but not this one. Would have loved to seen the reaction.

If I were him I would sell it to the highest bidder. A career ending injury can always happen and that's some big $$$ at stake.

Small world. I know him pretty well. I’ve been playing ball hockey with him for almost 20 years. Will see him tonight as he’s on my team. Will definitely chat with him about it.

Big guy. Bigger personality
