Without looking it up they've done it at least twice, Penner and Vanek. For all we know they could have made more offers that weren't accepted.

Right. I somehow missed that the Oilers appeared in consecutive entries on the list I was looking at.
They have done two (2) offer sheets in their history, both in 2007, less than three weeks apart, and neither was for a Calgary player. The risk that they will offer-sheet a Calgary player out of the blue is approximately zero.

If you want Holloway, trade one of the acquired picks for him and then sign him to a reasonable contract. I still think that's a bad trade, for the record. As noted above, you can get a better player than Holloway for a second round pick if that's the route you want to take.
Personally, I think the Flames should just use their picks. Trading one for a fourth liner who has shown absolutely no signs of being more than that seems like a waste of time.
People aren't overvaluing second round picks. You're undervaluing them.
|
That is quite the take. Holloway has size, speed, talent, similar numbers in the A to Zary, and was a really good player for them in the playoffs. He's not yet 23.
Calling him a 4th liner who has shown no signs of being more is just wrong.

I'd rather roll the dice on using the 2nd rounder for a player that could turn out to have a higher ceiling. Holloway looks like he's trending into a 3rd line grinder. For that reason, I wouldn't do the offer sheet.

He just isn’t that good. 9 goals in 89 games and he looked mediocre every time I saw him play. I’d rather just see what the Flames have in Pelletier before wasting a pick and overpaying a guy just to piss off the Oilers. I bet most people wouldn’t have any interest in offersheeting him if he was an Islander.
I’d rather trade a high 2nd for Kakko

Yes he is looking for centers, not wingers.
He is looking for good players not pluggers.
OUr 2nd round pick is more valuable than Holloway.

Our blueline has no space for him.
Not sure what the obsession is with wasting our picks on 13th forwards and 7th defenceman on the Oilers.

For who, for why? Is he truly the best target for a rebuilding org like the Flames right now? Are there better RFA options out there? Is this just a hurr durr it’ll hurt Edmonton situation? Seems like a half baked idea.
Do we have upcoming RFAs in the next few years that may either be poached or who we could be forced into overpaying in the likely scenario of retaliation? Whose spot is he taking on the roster or who is being kept in the minors longer to accommodate his arrival?
These all seem like useful questions to answer before saying yes or no

Naw. The Flames need top end talent not grinders. I'd rather see the Flames keep that lottery ticket and use the roster spot to develop a higher ceiling prospect.

Asset management, pure and simple. mid-first round picks stuck on a stacked team that is struggling with cap issues.
For a team like the flames, hurting for talent moving forward, with no cap issues, it makes perfect sense to take one or the other.
In my non-expert opinion, if we were taking one or the other, i would take Broberg, who had a good Playoffs when he got out there and could do well with more regular role.

If I had to pick one guy to give an offer sheet to, it would probably be Cole Sillinger.
I doubt he'd sign it though because the Jackets just signed Owen(his older brother) to a two way contract.
Perfetti could be an interesting option, but I think WPG would match anything up to $4.5M.
As for Holloway, I don't think it's worth it.

I thought Holloway was a winger. Not sure why we would offer sheet another winger?

Sillinger wouldn't sign it for two reasons:
Tate. McRae.

Philosophically, an offer sheet is only smart if you're trying to acquire a high end or core piece that you can build around, someone who is the type of player you wouldn't be able to acquire any other way.
Ask yourself this question: Is Dylan Holloway a high end or core piece that you want to keep long term? Is this the type of player that is hard to find?
If the answer to those questions is "no" then why would you do this knowing you would give up a valuable draft selection (as the Flames are sure to pick early in the 2nd round again), and risk retribution?
It's not a smart choice, and reeks of someone just trying to hurt their rival instead of just running their own race.
