Went with Brz. Next round onwards is going to be quite interesting

I look at guys by level, and I have Morin, Brzustewicz and Honzek on the same level (1st rounder equivalent, with a year of progression under their belt). Going with Morin, but could put them in any order.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect all or even many of those guys to even be NHLers (I figure about a 1/4 to 2/5 ratio at best). It's just that they all have the skillset to become a star if their development goes well.

Solovyov again for me, clear Tanev replacement in my eyes. My issue with these sorts of polls is my same issue with the Norris, obviously you need to be able to pass and score, but defensemen need defensive abilities.

Went with Honzek yesterday over Coronato forgetting about Brz, so now I feel I have to stick with Honzo till he's off the board.

Brz this one.
Honzek took a step back in his D+1 year.
Basha had a better D+0 year.
Gridin had an equivalent D+0 year.
Logically, Basha should be next but I'm sure the board is going to lean with the higher pick/1st round bias.

I have a bunch of players that I considered. Honzek, Brz, Grandin, Basha, Stromgren, Poirier, Morin. I think a player like Poirier isn't given enough credit because of the injury he sustained. He would have played in the NHL had he not had that unfortunate cut. Pelltier is also around in the mix.
I am so looking forward to the Penticton tournament this year.

well to be fair (and I'm not saying they will end up proven right) the team that drafted them both did too

Also - just want to be correct here.
Zary never struggled in the WHL after he got drafted.
Yes - he had some injuries but they only really impacted his production at the AHL level.
Not to spook anyone but Honzek - literally fell on his face production wise in the same league on the same team --- well over point per game to under point per game.
I would go as far to say that Lipinski plays a more coveted position - Center - and he leapfrogged Honzek in terms of development (not ceiling). I think Lipinski could potentially develop into a nice bottom 6 C.
So yes - Honzek's D+1 year was an outright disaster. Invisible most nights. And it isn't comparable to Zary at all who still dominated the WHL in his D+1 year.

Man, after this it's just wide open for me. Could be any one of 6-8 prospects that you could make a case for IMO.
Honzek, Gridin, Basha, Pelletier, Stromgren, Mews, Poirier, Morin, Battaglia
All (somewhat) recent 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounders.
Then you still have guys like Grushnikov, Solovyov, Kuzentzov, Suniev and Misa who are all legit prospects too.
The rest are kind of "filler" I suppose, but last year a "filler" guy was voted our 21st best prospect and then not only made the NHL but was actually a difference maker when he got there.

Looking back - as of today- I think the 2024 draft was stronger through the top 2 rounds than the 2023 draft.
Honzek was #17 on McKenzie's 2023 list and Basha was #30 on McKenzie's 2024 list.
I would say that they're definitely right to compare to each other.
Even Matvei Gridin and that is why I included him in my original comparison.
Should be interesting as to how it shakes down.

I think we are saying the same thing. I was comparing Gridin to Basha in my statement and I didn't mean to involve Honzek. I agree with your other points above

Yes he has size, speed and can easily turn it around...but I would have trouble voting for him ahead of Pelletier or other prospects who have yet to put up a stinker (Basha, Gridin, even Grush).

There are definitely a few guys that I debated between, but I don't think Peltier is in that group for me.
He looks more and more like a tweener in my eyes. The work ethic is probably good enough to keep him in the league, but it looks like his skill is more 3rd-4th line energy guy at best.
Hopefully I'm way off base though!

I see the same thing. More will than skill. I am far from a scout so hopefully he rebounds huge this year. Nothing is better than looking at these prospect rankings mid season and seeing how wrong we are with some players.

Pelts put up solid Q and AHL numbers, as well as PPG at the World Juniors.
He's certainly not that high octane create on his own type of player, but with a healthy season under his belt I think there's something there.

Bryz makes the most sense based off numbers and age. I can't wrap my head around why Vancouver threw him into that trade. It's mind-boggling.
I went with Pelletier because he was showing a lot of promise before his injury and my hope is that he bounces back. I think he could turn into a 2nd line winger.

Went poirier. I think he has to separate himself from the group. His problem might be guys surpassing him.

He wasn't a throw-in. For the Canucks, Jurmo was a throw-in and Kuzmenko was a cap dump. Brzustewicz was probably included as the sweetener to offset the cap dump. The Canucks felt they could afford to do that because they have Hughes. Also, wasn't it rumoured at the time that they were having trouble signing Brzustewicz?
It was still a massive miscalculation, but I can at least see what the thinking was (and where it went wrong).

I shouldn't have used the word "throw-in" and should've said "included".

Yes, there were some concerns about him signing - very likely due to Hughes, but that aspect of it never came out to my recollection.
