Hahah, I saw that he was almost 40 and all I could think was "how are teams still signing this guy; he's so old!".
Then I remembered he's like 2 months older than I am.
Oh no!

Anyone know how the bonus would be allocated if the Blues wanted to trade Suter at the deadline?

Assuming the Blues have enough cushion room to pay it if it's for like 20 games played type of thing, would an acquiring team have to absorb a portion on the current or next seasons cap even if they acquire him after the bonus is achieved?

I can't remember a one year bonus heavy contract being traded in season in recent years.

No idea what St. Louis is like in terms of depth on defence, so this might be a good move for them. He is too slow now to play top 4 minutes, but I will argue he is still smart enough to play bottom pairing minutes, or at least be the 7th.

For the Flames, it wouldn't make sense given who is waiver eligible, and the fact that the Flames have Hanley who can be the 7th. I don't want to sit kids out as the 7th, but with the waiver wire, someone like Solovyov might end up being recycled through that role. Adding Suter would be dumb, but if St. Louis doesn't have waiver issues on D, and are a little light, adding him as the 7th makes perfect sense. I would like to see what the bonuses are, but if he ends up being a 6th/7th, then this is a pretty good signing.

I think it is absolutely hilarious though that he is getting paid by 3 teams in the same fricken division. That's crazy!

Ridiculous, but likely true.
Once you've made over $100,000,000 in contracts you hopefully don't need to have a plan. You retire and indulge in hobbies and spend time with your family.

The guy is probably "hanging on" because he likes to play hockey. I'd likely do the same thing. At 40, you've got likely another 40 years to hang around, hit the beaches, travel, etc... I'd want to play as long as I could. F tarnishing my reputation and going out on a high note. I certainly wouldn't start a second career after either. Is he going to be a salesperson or an accountant? We're talking about a guy who made it to the big show and signed one of the biggest contracts in NHL history, not an AHL journeyman who has to worry about his finances after hockey.

Apparently the bonuses are, as per Strickland:

Bonus structure:
10 GP $225,000
30 GP $400,000
40 GP $500,000
60 GP or more $600,000
Qualify for playoffs and plays in at least 60 regular season games=$500,000

So if Suter ends up as the 7th D, which might well happen, he'll miss out on a lot of that bonus money.

That actually sounds reasonable.

That’s exactly what I was getting at.

I'm shocked the oilers didn't sign him. Near league minimum.. and he'd instantly be the third best defenseman the oilers have lol.

Why on earth would Suter sign with Edmonton?

I believe there's been enough noise to pretty well establish that he is one of those American players who don't want to play in Canada. He wasn't going to sign with any Canadian team unless it was the only offer on the table.

Besides, if he ever became a dirty rotten Oiler, I'm sure Uncle Gary could still knock his block off.
