Jesus...

He's a very good player and all, but giving a buyout proof $9M/year contract to a soon to be 30 year old for 7 years is the very definition of UFA insanity. Reinhart reportedly signed for a lower AAV and has done a lot more to help his team win.

That Lightning team has a great top line, a top #1 d-man, and a top goalie...and not much else.

$63M for a 30 year old Guentzel feels like a mistake.

I think that's a good signing, especially with the cap projected to go up all the way to $100M.

That said, I don't think Tampa will win another cup with the current roster. Not enough young talent coming in. Geekie maybe, that's about it. Their D is pretty average, and Vasy struggled a bit last year. IMO, this team just doesn't look as hungry as it did in its first couple of runs.

Stamkos for Guentzel is a pretty linear swap, while Sergachev for Moeser seems to be a downgrade.

Crazy but if you compare with Huberdeau and Kadri’s, it’s about right. You pay for UFA

Yikes

Would rather have Stammer locked up on an 8 year vs that for Guentzel.

Carolina quite good at preventing overpayment apparently. They had a discipline to prevent an inefficient contract.

Its been reported that the Canes agreed to 8x8 with Guentzel, but by the time they did Guentzel had already switched focus to what Tampa could offer.

They got lucky.

Stamkos is washed. Useless at even strength at this point.

Tanev was a target at the trade deadline (and at the time the Lindholm trade was done). For free agency, I think it was accepted that he would get paid, such that he wouldn’t be a realistic option for the Canucks.

Losing out on Guentzel is fine. Likely doesn’t guarantee a cup win for Tampa. Canucks still have options. Maybe Stamkos or Toffoli?

He still had 81 points and 40 goals in 79 games last season. Calling him washed is not accurate at all.

Special teams are insanely important. Even if his 5v5 production has dipped he’s still a very valuable player.

Yet Stamkos still has way more points in each of the last 3 seasons than Guentzel.

The Crosby effect is real. Reminds me of the Kunitz days. Not buying into Guentzel worth an 8 year deal. Not even sure he's worth a 5. Glad to see Tampa about to be screwed.

No he isn't. He was their best player in playoffs and had a good regular season too.

He was a liability at 5 on 5. Racking up powerplay points with a 140 point Kucherov isn’t worth $8m.

People think this is a bad signing? As far as July 1 goes it's as good as it gets. Tampa's window isn't lasting for 7 years, the last couple don't matter, and I don't think there are 10 better wingers in the NHL right now.

I think he'd be a fine signing even at 10x7. This is a win for Tampa IMO.

Barkov makes $10 million. You think Guentzel does as much on the ice as current Selke winner, Stanley Cup champion, top line center Sasha Barkov?

You might be valuing the player a little too highly.

But even so, the structure of the contract is terrible. Buyout proof for players well into their late 30's is a terrible plan. See Lucic.

Yup, I like Reinhart's contract better than this

No, Barkov is underpaid. You can get a lot of money and still be underpaid. McDavid should make at least 15. If Barkov was available today he might get 13.5x7.
