LA win in this trade by the virtue of not need to add anything to get rid of PLD and his big contract, and get something in return.

Ovi will just call the KGB if PLD doesn't improve.

Unfortunately the cup doesn't come with him in this trade. Say what you want about PLD but he's going to immediately be one of their best forwards for better or worse and it appears they are still trying to win with OV. The Capitals look to be heading down the road of the Flames in the coming years so by the back half of his contract it won't matter much for a team that's very likely rebuilding.

The Kings have $23.5mil of cap space now, but only 13/23 spots filled on the roster. So they're potentially in tough as it is.

Gotta think they need to move some salary out still in order to do anything in free agency, unless the plan is to bridge Byfield and fill out most of the rest of the roster spots with league minimum & ELC guys.

You gotta wonder what’s going on in the head of a guy like that. Does he ever ask himself why he hasn’t fit in anywhere? Is it all everyone else’s fault?

Rooney plays C.

I imagine they may give Lewis yet another 1 year contract.

It is pretty bold for LA.

They get a goalie who is still pretty servicable and has won a cup in recent memory.

And they get rid of that contract...and open up cap space doing so since Kuemper makes less than PLD.

Will be interesting to see if they are active in Free Agency or trades now since they were able to solve their goalie and PLD issue without using any assets to do so.

This is type of trade I would have expected the Flames to make if they really were trying to be competitive. That’s an ugly trade tree for the Kings but I like that they bit the bullet and moved on

That's an impressive pivot by LA.

Two birds with one stone

Dammit, why couldn't Conroy trade Markstrom for PLD?

Oh yeah, it is because PLD sucks and rumoured to be terrible in the room. I want to say that LA won this, but when you factor in the assets they have given up in this trade tree, it is a huge loss. Winnipeg are gigantic winners from all of this - PLD was thought to be a negative asset due to his contract, and Laine is better, but unquestionably a depreciated asset. That was some fine work by Winnipeg.

Byfield isn't signed yet, and was playing wing all last year.
Thomas played 7 games last year.
Helenius played none (and his AHL stats suck).
Pinelli played none (and his AHL stats suck).

It might be hard to be a big ego when you're sitting across from Ovi.

I think he's going to take a hit when he's tried with Ovi but then quickly demoted to playing with Sonny Milano.

PLD has no redeeming qualities. The guy is an actual bum. When you have had huge issues including your effort in 3 places you are the problem.

This is not like Huberdeau a guy who cares and tries and it's just not clikcing. PLD got paid, he's living his best life.

Hmmm I think PLD is a really good player when he is on. Really bad trade tree for the Kings here. Makes you more optimistic for the Flames chances with this team in the division

I have a tough time understanding PLD, I mean, when he was drafted by Columbus, ok fine, crap team and crap city. And then, Winnipeg, not a crap team per se, but crap city. But LA, the team wasn't that bad and the city is great. Who doesn't want to live in LA when you have boat load of money? May be he's just not into hockey anymore.
