With McDonagh in Tampa, would the Lightning move Cernak and roll with Perbix? Cernak isn’t a cap dump, but he would be perfect with Weegar (back to LD) or Kylington. Moves Miranov down with Bahl on the bottom pairing.

I don’t mind Pachal. I get the feeling Conman is done on D and in net unless he can’t sign Kylington.
I think he’s going to start cleaning up the forwards and centers next. It’s a little disjointed.

They need work at getting younger at center and get some direction on the wing. There are a lot if older players up front. Kadri, Huberdeau, Backlund, Mangiapane, Coleman. I’d bet Magiapane or Coleman are leaving somehow this year. They need to make room for guys like Coronato if he keeps progressing.
If the window they are looking for is 3-4 years from now I think the trend looks good on D and in net. But not up front. Some work to do there. I agree your path might be correct. Bridge players until drafted players are ready. Because I don’t see any first or second liners in the AHL. Especially at center unless they move Zary there. I see Sharangovich as a better fit on the wing.
Duchene would fit that bill. First or second line center for 2-3 seasons. Bumps Sharongovich back to the wing. Not sure you’d need to do much more. We have a lot of forwards if that happens and they need to start finding some young centers. That the big hole I see in the plan. Younger top two centers and some direction on the wing.
Gut feel is there are more moves coming in the next 3 weeks or so. It’ll be very interesting to see what happens.

This team definitely doesn't look done. If Kylington signs there are too many bodies on D, and only 2 proven top 4 D.
Vladar and Wolf are a huge gamble because of Vladar's surgery in the offseason.
There are a bunch of middle 6 wingers, and rumors we might add more(Debrusk, Duclair, Zucker).
Personally, I think that the interest in Mangiapane, Kuzmenko, Sharangovich, and Coleman will peak 1-2 weeks into free agency after most UFAs are signed, and leading up to the TD.
There were also rumors that Conroy is looking to overpay for free agents on short term deals. Which could be a good way to generate assets, if he intends to flip them. Monahan 1yr x $7.5M anyone? Or maybe Tanev at 1yr x $7M? Anyway, It's going to be a fun off season full of speculation.

^ Trading some of those middle six wingers for more picks before/at the draft makes lots of sense to me. Trade for more 2nd-4th rounders, package some of those picks together to move up a bit to get guys you're targetting, free up even more cap for flexibility in July.

I keep asking, but if we’re planning to overpay some bums on shorter term deals, why not just keep the guys we already have who have demonstrated they can put up points with the player we gave $84M to?

I agree, but I'm guessing that a team won't go shopping for a Mangiapane while there are a bunch of similar wingers waiting on July 1st. Off the top of my head: Debrusk, Duclair, Zucker, Arvidsson, Drouin, Teravainen, P. Kane, Tarasenko, Toffoli, Bertuzzi, Domi, Mantha, and I'm sure there are more. I think once most of them are gone the demand would go up.
As for Sharangovich and Kuzmenko, I'm not sure if and at what number would the Flames like to keep them. I'm assuming that Sharangovich has more value due to age, but I could see Conroy being reluctant to move him. Kuzmenko just clicked here, so I personally really want to keep him purely for the entertainment value during a rebuild.
^ As far as overpaying bums. I don't mind it as long as you can trade them at the TD. Monahan brought back a 1st, Tanev 2nd + prospect.

Teams might shop for Mangiapane if we retain salary. His contract with salary retained is much cheaper than most of what those guys will get. Depends on the Flames ask but cap is still tight for many teams.

I just don't know if me can technically retain before the draft. Due to 3/3 retention slots being used in the 2023-24 season.

What forward should we go shopping for?
Top 9. Huberdeau, Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, Coleman, Backlund, Kadri, Pospisil, Zary, Mangiapane.
So are we shopping for 4th liners?

I could see the Flames shopping for someone that can play C in the top 6 or top 9, and won't require a long term contract. Probably Henrique, Monahan, Roslovic, or Duchene. A bit of insurance for Zary/Pospisil, if they don't pan out at C.
As you pointed out, bringing in another forward into the top 9 doesn't make sense unless we ship at least 2 top 9 forwards out in trades.

Yeah, I think we could use another top-6 center to fill in for the next couple of years.

We get assets now by trading our current players plus more assets later on when we trade the players we pickup for free now.

But unlike the Flames, Buffalo isn't in any sort of cap trouble even with Skinner. So why would they give up a high first round to solve a problem that isn't there?

They wouldn't.
But I doubt any team is going to take on that problem for less than a high first.
So there's just no deal to be made.
