I just don't get doubling down on a roster that hasn't shown much in recent years, especially without some big name star power to push them over the top. Sure, both Lindholm and Hanifin will keep you competitive long-term, but unless you have a superstar land in your lap, there isn't anything other than the mushy middle for this team in the foreseeable future.

I guess I don't completely hate it, but I don't like it much either. I'd be much happier getting a king's ransom for both Hanifin and Lindholm and rebuilding with a core about 5 years younger, but that's just me.

Will you feel the same about the Panthers if they are a 17th place team or worse again this year?? Fire sale?

Hanifin is a player that is hard to acquire...keeping good youngish players seems to be a good idea no matter where your team is at

Getting rid of a 26 year old top 4 dman gets them closer to a championship...I don't see the logic

All your favorite shrewd rebuilding teams would love Hanifin

And also, context matters.

If the team is bad but has a bunch of younger players playing big roles on the team and has a bunch of blue chippers in the prospect pool, you need patience.

Hanifin is more valuable signed than not

should things fall off a cliff and the Flames want a total teardown he would welcome a trade. Guy is just entering his prime and still on the upswing.

I get the debate with older players but not younger guys.

Flames didn't win #### with Tkachuk but they still would have liked to keep him obviously...they are almost the same age, less than a year apart.

Would rather go big on Zadorov.

It could be there is no king’s ransom to be had for the reasons you outlined.

It’s really hard to have an opinion on this potential signing without knowing term and dollars. Both Hanifin and Lindholm could play on any team in the league but so could almost all of our players.

Pretty much have to sign a Dman with how many are on expiring contracts. Kinda makes sense to lock up the 26 year old. Don’t love it don’t hate it

It was mentioned during one of the recent broadcasts that Hanifin is the 10th youngest defenseman in NHL history to reach 600 games. It feels like he has been around forever, it's easy to forget that he is still only at the age when most defensemen start entering their peak years.

I wouldn't be too surprised if he re-signs. When Gaudreau and Tkachuk left and there was a lot of talk about Americans not wanting to play in Canada, someone in the media reported that Hanifin was happy in Calgary, so it shouldn't be assumed all American players want to move on.

I am not 100% convinced that the rumours of him not wanting to re-sign are true. As far as I know, he never said anything to the media and it could have been something the media just makes up or jumps to conclusions on. It might be true, but I wouldn't assume that it is.

Yeah, assuming they’ve made their top picks already - absolutely.

Need to bottom out first though.

Flames are deciding to compete without top tier players though. It’s a weird approach. Most teams in professional sports want marketable, game-breaking talented franchise players. Flames? Nah, not interested it would seem. Perhaps if attendance continues to drop, they’ll start changing approaches.

Zadorov at 5 plus would be awful. I'd rather sign Gilbert.

This is exactly what they thought they were getting in Huberdeau. It’s also what they were hoping for in the Hamilton acquisition.

I don’t see the Flames avoiding these types of players. You’re just suggesting they tank which yeah they don’t want to do.

Would rather try upgrade our forward position by trading Hanifin. Not a fan.

His age on an 8 year deal won’t be an issue. Just whether you think he’s good enough to warrant it? I don’t. Or I should say, I’d rather the money be allocated elsewhere.

It's kinda like returning to the scene of the crime.

There are only a handful of players on the roster that are living up to their current contracts.

I am going to guess 8x6.85M. Followed up by a Lindholm announcement of 8x8.85M.
