I only know it from cultural references, but I'm pretty sure The Gong Show was a tv talent show in the 70s where they would hit a gong to tell the acts their time was up.

Think of it as a 70s version of the worst acts of America’s Got Talent, with a big gong instead of buzzers. The acts were so bad that you were a winner if you managed to finish your act without being cut short by the judge hitting the gong.

The funniest part was when judges would fight over the hammer to stop other judges from gonging a performer. Happened every show. Never got old.

There was a brief revival a few years ago hosted by Mike Myers... but not really Mike Myers... it was Mike Myers in full make-up playing a character and initially they wouldn't even acknowledge that it was Myers.
