First off, that arrow is so ####ing small that everyone just sees the green sign and thinks they are in the off leash area. If you can't make it out, it's the little tiny thing by the dog's poop distributor.

Second, they are right next to the path, telling everyone on the path they are A-OK to have their dog off the leash, which they are 100% not.

Third, people are ####ing idiots. You can't tell them what they can do without also telling them what they can't do, which is why it needs some indication pointing to the path direction that dogs must be on leash.

Really, everything the city has ever done on Nose Hill has made it worse. Like the washed out gravel paths with foot deep cuts, but I won't go into that rant...
Absolutely! The bollards personify wasted taxpayer dollars, so dumb. One good thing about them is Merlins love using them as an observation perch in search of their next avian meal, especially in late summer, loved seeing them during my evening runs. I think the whole park should be on leash only, off leash dogs also terrorize the wildlife who call the park home just as much as they do humans. I know exactly where that photo was taken, about 0.75KM east of Shag parking lot just about to head downhill to 14th/Berkely Gate street tunnel.

The washed out gravel paths on the slopes are bad too, especially the one leading up the hill right at the 14th/Berkley Gate tunnel. I ran all year round on the hill and would stick to the constructed paths for safety in winter, I regularly made my ascent up the hill at the tunnel and that path was always bad, mini canyons so much of the path was gone.

Citronella would work. It's amazing how effective the bark collars are.

"They're friendly" is a true classic, but I most enjoy hearing a dog bozo just keep calling their dog's name louder and LOUDER and LOUDER to absolutely no effect. It is some of the most obnoxious human behaviour possible, yet I absolutely revel in delight when it happens.

You can get a gel spray to turn yourself into a Dilophosaurus. Requires more accuracy but potentially spares you and your dog from back spray.

Yelling at your dog to be quite is like putting your water in the fridge because you're trying to boil it.

Dogs that aren't calm have owners who aren't calm.

One of mine is a bit reactive. Best trick I've learned is to throw a handful of kibble at any off leash dog that approaches us. Stops them dead in their tracks.

I don't know what the big deal is I just launch off a bear banger every morning before I take mine for a walk. Really clears the trail.

and for the record - i absolutely love dogs, but not if it attacks someone
As a dog owner I would definitely not hesitate in dealing with a dog attacking a kid, even lethally. On the other hand, I may lethally deal with a kid attacking a dog also.

My dogs kibble is quite large, and I whip it at them as hard as I can.

I like to call my dog a raging piece of ####, or a crazy bastard.
It puts other owners on edge and make them want to control their dogs.

Yeah, I mean having people get aggressive with me is something I'm prepared for if I mace their dog. I have tried to take the laid back approach and my dog ended up in the ER for it and could have died if the puncture wounds were 1 cm in either direction on her neck... If I had been carrying deterrent spray I could've sprayed the aggressive dog and possibly stopped the attack - results of that be what they may.

I've called 3-1-1 but by the time they respond the dog owners are long gone. I've put requests in to 3-1-1 to have the school parks and greenspaces around my house monitored more frequently but you can probably guess how many bylaw officers I've seen at these places.

It's not just my dog, either. If I want to take my two-year-old to the school playground by my house and there are two off-leash pitbulls roaming around, you can imagine I don't feel entirely comfortable with that, either.

I could have a handgun with me and I still wouldn't let my daughter anywhere that playground if there were two off-leash pitbulls roaming around... Not sure a can of mace is going to help you with that.

Sounds like you have a neighbourhood problem. Random feral off leash dogs roaming children’s playgrounds?

How else would you get the park to yourself.
