I still feel there’s a place for fighting in the game, however I do agree that the days of needing an enforcer and staged fights are over.

Give me pests that play on the line and grind guys down versus a slow enforcer. Hopefully they can get a few speedy versions of Nieminen. That guy was one of the best agitators.

Didn't Dube go after Trouba right after the hit on Kadri? How would Lucic stop that?

The difference is those successful teams have skilled players that can also lean on guys and at least stand their ground if challenged in a scrum.
There's a big difference between that and bottom line goons who are strictly role players.
But at the same time Mark Stone and Matt Tkachuk while tough are most useful when they stay out of scraps and stick to making plays. Those two have had to learn that.
Tkachuk still had to learn that he can't go too far out of his way to make a statement because there will be retaliation. Ended up being rendered useless at the tail end of the series.
If you can package skill and toughness together, you building your team well for the current era of the game, but we no longer need face punchers eating up cap.
I think Honzek is exactly the blueprint of player you want for today's NHL. Hopefully we continue to draft players with those attributes, including size.

Their D averaged 6'4 and they always had Maroon.

Sorry, but I disagree with that assessment entirely.
Out of the past winners, they are/were tops in that category IMO.
And their smaller guys played bigger because of the overall team make up.
You could make the argument that they didn't win anything until they supplemented their line up with guys like Maroon, while being huge on defense already.

Pick any team that has had any kind of sustained playoff success and you will find that the players of other teams (and fans of their victims) think they are dirty. Being tough to play against, physical, and intimidating, is simply part of the game. There may be less fighting now, but it's still a tough game.

I only care about the GAF meter.
That meter barely moved last year. ....and the biggest offender was Nazim Kadri look at me I have a Stanley cup ring.
Hey Naz ...IDGAF about your ring. What I GAF about is you not pouting , busting your arse every shift , enough of the no look drop passes to NO ONE and OH ....maybe keep your head up or your career will be over .
Your selfish antics and shiny hardware don't impress much when your write cheques with that mouth , attitude, poor performance that your butt can't cash.
You were James Neal Reincarnated.....
We don't need another knuckle scraping trogledite on this team....so for those worried about no Lucic....pffft....let's win some damn games please . I don't care how tough you look....fan you win.?
We need team toughness , speed , skill , youth , energy and I'd say we're now on our way there with Conroy in charge .
And sure Yelle was Gritty and they called him sandbox but he damn well earned it.
Never seen a flame block shots , win important face offs, not be a liability more than old number #11
I see a little of that on certain players now ....Mangiapane doesn't know he's small because he plays 7 feet tall and his GAF meter is off the charts when he's healthy.
Holy crap I miss hockey. Does it show?
Let's go!!!

Goodrow and Maroon were the only forwards over 6"1', with the vast majority being six foot or under - which illustrates my point that playstyle and a willingness to battle/compete is far more important than having sheer size. They did have a beefier defensive core, but it was not all that physically intimidating. They ranked 8th out of 16 teams in both years they won in terms of hits/60.

But they still had a guy or 2 willing to drop them regularly, Flames don't have any. Or at least nobody that should be.
