Huberdeau.
Bad season last year, he was the first to acknowledge it:
Committed long term, franchise playmaker in Florida, already has taken the young guys under his wing like Pelletier and Coronato.
2nd pick and are at least an “A” to Rasmus.

Huska also said Weegar was the best d-man he has ever coached.
It's really hard to guess who is going to be the next captain. Based on resumé it's either Huberdeau or Lindholm but Huberdeau's past season threw a wrench in that and Lindy might be leaving.
I would approve of either Lindy, Hubby, Weegar or Rasmus but in the end it's the room who decides.

In a much better timeline, Chucky.
In this timeline, Andersson.

I'd like to see Rasmus get the captaincy. Backlund and Lindholm would have had nods as well but since they made trade requests (and maybe rescinded?) they no longer deserve it.
Huberdeau would be a big disappointment as a captain. He did nothing to deserve it last year and at this point I'm hoping he's closer to being LTIRetired than being named captain.

Dion, that doesn't mean anything, lol. There's two separate things happening here. The Flames are naming a captain, as per Conroy. That may include some opinion from players but not likely a fan style player vote.
But here, this is a thread asking who you'd name captain, with the obvious understanding that we the fans don't actually choose the captain.

Okay. I see your point. In that case it would either be Andersson or Weegar.

My thoughts too.
I do want a captain but with all of the turmoil around the team in the last year, it seems better to let the season progress and I think the decision will become obvious.

Iggy’s last year under Sutter saw him produce a whopping 12 points more than Huberdeau this season. This despite Iggy being a year younger.
Jarome would go on to have four more seasons of 86+ points, including seasons of 94 and 98.

Weager - seems level headed and a natural leader. Impressive how he managed to find his way last year. Kept struggling through season until it worked. Only 29 and here on long term deal. One of best players on team.
Ras - Clearly proud to be a flame with Backlund like vibes in that respect. Young enough to do it a long time. Plays with intensity. One of best players on team. Clearly an alpha. Unafraid to call out older guys - see interview about Neal a few years back.
Huby - seems to like organizing things off the ice and making everyone feel included. Third worst contract in NHL according to Dom at Athletic and signed for 8 years, so he's going to have that hanging on his head his entire tenure.
Backlund - probably the leader in the dressing room already. Perfect mix of class, intensity, community orientation. Loves playing for the flames and city. Might not be here for very long.
Kadri - Would be cool to have a Muslim captain. Super community oriented. Apparently well liked in dressing room. Clearly plays with a lot of intensity. Has a ring. Unclear what his leadership skills are like.
|
I actually want to make a small argument for 3 more.
Lindholm - If he re-signs, he might want it to be his team. He has been an integral part of the top line for several seasons now. He leads by example, and is often difficult to play against.
Dube - He's younger, has been a captain before. He's always the fittest Flame. He might also be in the right spot to pop this season.
Tanev - He's much like Backlund, and he leads by example. He's a warrior one that brings his A game every game. He makes players around him better, and has an awesome smile for the media.

I like the idea of Raz getting the C since he was developed in our system especially under Huska. I think he’ll be a serious contender. Otherwise I’d pick Weegar.
Backs I would just trade to a contender at this point.
Huberdeau has leadership qualities too and would be fitting but I worry it just adds to the pressure of having a rebound season…

I'd pick Backlund, but it seems he's not going to sign, so I'd pick Weegar Andersson or Huberdeau.
