there is the unnecessary and irrelevant shot at a Flames player in a thread about a signing that has zero to do with them

Remember when Feaster traded down in the 2012 draft with Wilson on the board and then the Flames spent the next decade lacking both toughness and right handed shots? Good times.

Not the best contract but to be expected when the Caps have committed to staying competitive while Ovi chases the goal record.

We skipped Vas, Hertl, Teravainen , Wilson and even Laughton for the best player of the draft. What else do you want?

I remembered screaming for Teravainen lol

This is why i think Calgary should use a late pick every year or two on a hard nosed mutant in addition to using one on a goalie.

It's so rare to find a beast who can actually play. But if you find one and have him during the early years when he's cheap and impactful, job done. Then let him leave via UFA and let others overpay.

Would love a Tanner Jeanott

“Intangibles” are never worth more than a 2 year deal.

It’s not easy to find thugs with some skills like Wilson

I guess we'll trade Kadri for Wilson in 4 years.

Troy Terry just signed for 7 x 7.0m.
Tom Wilson just signed for 7 x 6.5m.

some teams are just better at this than others, I guess. Or agents, if you want to flip perspectives.

While hand-waiving $1.6 million in cap like it isn’t a reasonable bottom 6 forward/bottom pair D worth of cap on its own.

Well, maybe. But Wilson isn't an example of a late pick used well. He's a first rounder. Whcih Calgary could have had, as was said (or Vasilevski, Teravainen or Hertl).

GMs aren’t idiots. They know these deals will probably look bad on the back end. The hope is that the players will contribute to success in the short-term. The Caps still think their window is open for a couple more seasons - they aren’t rebuilding until OV retires.

And they are probably rewarding past performance a bit too. Cups do funny things to organizations. They know if he plays great and if not insurance picks up the bill.

Depends on how you define late pick. Backlund is an example of a late 1st round pick that has given the Flames surplus value over his slot.

I know. He was a first rounder. But there are others found in later rounds which work and is my point.

It’s unlikely that a guy like Wilson will maintain production as he gets much past 30/32.

He will be 37 when this deal ends.

That’s terrifying.

If you had to extend now, it could have been a 3 year deal at this AAV? Why would Wilson turn that deal down if offered?

Similar to the Pens dilemma.
