I'll never forget him getting absolutely rocked at the Saddledome during the World Juniors. It was scary. You could hear a pin drop.
Was at the game, and watching it, you just knew, right then, that it was likely a concussion, and that it would have a long term impact on his career. I have no doubt that it was the beginning of, and the basis for, his ongoing injury problems, and the inability to achieve his potential.

August 3: Baertschi has confirmed his retirement in a statement from SC Bern, citing health concerns. “Like most players, I’ve had a number of injuries that are now taking their toll,” Baertschi said. “After months of training, I realized that my body can no longer perform as well as I need it to. And playing with less than 100 percent, I can’t accept that.”
I used to go to the off leash dog park on that slope between West Hillhurst and Briar Hill. His wife would take their dog who was a husky and I had one so they would play. Never let on I know who she was. Followed her on twitter (she was pretty hot).
One day replied to a tweet of hers, How is Baer doing (I think that was the dogs name). BLOCKED.

I disagree with the notion that Hartley or Burke ruined him. He was lazy, and that's what ruined him, and that's what Burke spoke about during that now (in)famous press conference.
Well that may be true, there was no need for Burke to publicly call him out the way he did. I'm sure his intentions were to light a fire, but not everyone responds well to that type of open criticism. A lot of these conversations could have happened behind closed doors.
It seemed like from the very get-go that there were going to be problems as Sven didn't fit the mold of 'truculence.' Ultimately it worked out well for the Flames, but it could have been handled better by management.

Same. Was excited by that pick. I watched him practice at Winsport back in the day...he seemed so slick and smooth and really dedicated, last player on the ice still practicing stuff...
Oh Sven, we hardly knew ye.
Happy retirement, Baert-man.
Last player on ice practicing the stuff he liked to do, no problem. I think his career would have been much better had he practiced the stuff he didn't like to do.
