It’s Huberdeau without a shadow of a doubt.
If Markstrom is bad again you can go get another goalie, if Huberdeau is bad again, then you need to go get another superstar, which you’re not finding (without some incredible luck) without a top 5 pick. It sets the entire direction of the team.

Absolutely they can step it up. I think this team is much better than advertised. The coaching seems more balanced and Huska is not going to deviate too much from the defensive of style of play, Players are going to be encouraged to be more creative to do what they do best. 3 on 3 is going to get some attention and players who have ability will be placed in positions to succeed.
I think the key hete is to find a way to pry Nylander out of Toronto, if we can do than and Lindholm stays, that is a pretty good group.

I don’t know that they will not deviate from the defensive system
Darryl liked them checking on the boards and when they lost those battles they got exposed a lot

My understanding was that'Huska was going to make some changes, but keep some things the same. More to the point that I was trying to make, is that I think the Flames will still have some good defensive structure while getting more creative. Agree with your point.
I don't think we had the right personnel for Darryl's style of play, Looks like the Flames are Identifying skill while getting bigger and faster.

Not a rebound candidate but if Huska can’t deliver, I don’t know what they do next year, especially if they lock in another 30+ contract this year

Markstrom back to even 80% of his Vezina candidate season and the Flames will be in ok shape.
If he was in 80% form last year and not 60%, the Flames are in the playoffs (and then who knows) via less reg season games go to overtime (losses), less regulation losses, and increased skater confidence. Vladar took his cues from Markstrom and had every opportunity to step up, and did just as poorly.
If it's Wolf, because Markstrom is terrible again, it's a lot of pressure on a rookie, and that can go any number of ways.
Mangipane back to scoring 30+ goals isn't going to move the needle. Even Huberdeau getting back to form; again, with a terrible season from him last year, the Flames still nearly made the playoffs with bottom tier goaltending. If the number 1 goalie isn't on at least average career form most nights, you can forget about playoffs most of the time.

There may be something else to this…
What did these goalies have in common?

A team in front of them that continuously gave up far too many great chances.

Its Markstrom/Vladar...not even sure there is an argument otherwise.
Huberdeau could get back too 100+ pts and it wouldn't make a difference with the goaltending we saw last season. At least Markstrom started to show sigs of returning to form the last couple months of the season, so there is some hope he gets it back for this season.
I think its a safe bet that both guys will be better than they were...just to what degree will it happen?
Team defense was also a massive problem and has to be addressed, though Im thinking the change behind the bench will be enough incentive for guys to buy back in to what they need to do. Losing Hanifin (if/when it happens) will hurt in this regard and possibly cannot be replaced internally. Kylington isnt going to be that guy, but he will help in transition.
The defense is actually pretty iffy when any of the top 5 are taken out and really not sure how they cover for that inevitability.

I agree on team defence but doesn't that also corelate to how a goalie performs?
Markstrom and Vladar can be better, but blaming them for the entire season is nonsense and I am not saying you are but that seems to be the narrative.
Seattle and LA made the playoffs with equally poor goaltending numbers. Our offence notably the powerplay would have made a difference.
I do believe Huska recognizes what the issue was in our end he has talked about making tweaks to how we defend.
I don't think it will be one individual bounce back will make us better, its the team bouncing back together as a team a better offence, powerplay better in own end will will help most guys bounce back.

Longer term it's Huberdeau for sure. You need him to have a good season in the first year of that 8 x $10.5M deal.
In terms of just 23-24 on-ice success though it's Markstrom. If he's a .915 goaltender again then this team is probably a playoff team.

If Huberdeau is an 80-90 point player and Markstrom goes back to 910-915 goaltending, this is a playoff team. Can they win the Cup? I think no, and that's why I've been advocating for a rebuild. Capitalize on the returns of your good players now, instead of waiting till they suck like we did with Iggy, Bouwmeester, etc.
So, those two.

Number 1 is definitely Markstrom. As bad as some of the other Flames performed last season, had Markstrom even been just average and got us two more wins, Flames would have made it into the playoffs.

Probably? I think if Markstrom was playing at a 0.905 level this team is in the playoffs. The kind of turnaround needed from the players for them to succeed is not huge.

The 23-24 team isn't the 22-23 team and might not be playing "Sutter" hockey.
I don't think .915 guarantees they get in but makes it very probable.
