Leaf fans were pretty yappy when they hired Tre. They weren't happy with the draft from what I saw. Bet they love this lol.

Correct me if I am wrong, but a 35+ year remains on the cap even after the player is assigned to the minors, with only 100K coming off instead of the max of 1.25 million, correct?
If the above is true, then this is a laughable deal. Lucic IS a better player, and I bet he isn't signing a multi-year deal. Lucic is both tougher (based on the same guys that they fought) and produces more. Reaves is so ineffective at almost everything else now other than being extremely scary on the ice.
However, I do think that the Leafs absolutely need more toughness. We all saw Mathews take a lot of abuse, and when he tried to stick up for himself by abusing back, he ends up looking foolish laughing it off as the guys challenged him to fight. I think you could see that it affected him. Having Reaves there would probably put a stop to that, and Mathews can just get back to taking just the 'regular abuse' that stars tend to take.
Yeah, I am really glad that Treliving isn't the GM here any longer. I think part of the reason that Calgary spun its' wheels under his tenure was the dead cap space in buyouts plus the bloated contracts in the bottom 6 (and occasionally in the bottom pairing on D), among a few other issues. I wouldn't be happy about this if I am a Leafs' fan, but at least Mathews won't have to put up with that nonsense any longer.

Doesn't make sense. I blame Flames ownership.

I don't know what's funnier - that the Leafs are apparently tripping all over themselves to sign a player probably no one else is rushing to sign, or that they're answer to their playoff failures is a guy who doesn't do much in them.

From CapFriendly:
Quote:
What is a 35-plus contract?
A contract is designated a 35+ contract if the player's age on the first year of the contract is 35 or older (as of June 30 prior to the year of the effective contract).
35+ contracts that are two years in length or longer and:- Have a signing bonus in the 2nd or later year, OR
- Are front-loaded
Will not benefit from a reduced cap hit regardless of the player's location of play, termination, retired status, or a buyout.
This rule was introduced by the NHL to prevent teams from backloading contracts past when the player was expected to retire. An exception to this rule is that a team will receive a $100,000 cap hit reduction if the player is on the 2nd or later year of the contract and assigned to the minors.

It’s going to require bold moves to get past the big bad Panthers.

May be their thinking is that Bruins is signing Lucic so they need Reeves to counter that. But, Lucic is more useful than Reeves.

Signing Kassian would have been funnier.

I thought Shanahan would oversee things to ensure Treliving didn't make those mistakes. Anyway, glad he's no longer the GM here, when you see these dumb deals being handed out just to "win" on the day. Reeves is such a blowhard these days - he loves the attention and big talking. He'll add nothing to the Leafs though, which is a headscratcher for why they signed him. Fighting is out of the game so is he intimidating? Not really. Totally overvalued. Good job Treliving, keep offering long term deals to non-core players. You won, great.

You know, the fact that a Ryan Reeves signing has broken, but Elias Lindholm hasn’t decided if he wants $72 million leads me to believe Elias Lindholm is not coming back. And I’m OK with that.

I've been very consistent on this.
Trade. Him.

Yes, and no.
It’s like Gaudreau - they were negotiating with him up to the literal last hour they were allowed to. And it’s like, if you wanted the $84M, you’d have said so before the 11th hour. It’s not that hard a decision.
If this was done, there’d be rumblings it was done. But all that’s come out is “Calgary has offered the moon” and Lindholm is still considering.
Matthews is already rumoured to be getting a 5-year deal, and nobody will be surprised when it’s announced.
I don’t blame guys for doing math and realizing an extra $4M (which is all $500k extra is on an 8-year) doesn’t matter if the situation isn’t what you want.

Gaudreau was a pending UFA. There was a deadline to sign him. There isn't a deadline with Lindholm for another year. All that July 1st means is that he can now sign an extension.
It would be nice if there was clarity on whether or not he wants to re-sign but nothing leaking tonight while something in Toronto leaking means nothing.

The difference is Gaudreau had a 5 team NTC that kicked in for that final year. He got a lot of control at that point, which meant that if was intent on grinding the contract down and becoming a UFA, he basically could. Anyway, we've got one year to handle the Lindholm situation. I'm confident he's gone, if he's not signing. They're not letting this get that far.

Makes no sense, would be a terrible move, good to see Tre hasn’t changed.
