Chicago has 5 1st rounders and 8 2nd rounders spread over the next 3 drafts and are very likely to add more over the next 2 deadlines. I think they won't miss a 7th.

Not suggesting they'll miss a 7th rounder. It's just funny they effectively "rushed" a negotiation with a player no one would offer that kind of money to. Corey Perry for $4M at this stage of his career is really wild. And, I understand the cap floor necessity as well. I might be on an island, but it's the craziest contract I recall seeing even with all the factors (floor, mentorship, etc.) included.

I think he felt he needed time to explain to Perry exactly what his role was and why Chicago wanted him so badly.

I don't think Perry is just about the money these days. Perhaps Perry might have quickly signed with a contender who offered him $2M? It simply wasn't worth the risk.

And Davidson is their GM, Richardson the coach. And Davidson seems to know exactly what he is doing these days. Although it's easy to look smart when you have a ton of cap space and won the lottery.

Perry hasn't been paid $2 million for the last 4 seasons.

Perry hasn't signed a contract in the first week of free agency since 2019.

This whole sequence of trading a pick for a guy and then massively overpaying him makes no sense.

Hawks could have easily waited until free agency opened and explained the plan to Perry and then likely have signed him to one year at $3 million.

I think this contract will drive most of the contenders away from trading for him at the deadline even at half retained.

I get the Hawks won't miss a 7th and have the cap space to waste, but it still looks like general incompetence.

guessing Perry would only sign with Chicago for crazy dollars. Otherwise, he would have signed cheap with a contender as he did the previous 4 years

Exactly. Money talks but you need to offer a lot when the guy already has money in the bank!

I guess I should really defer to an Oiler's fan on judging "general incompetence".

But unless you can say with 100% confidence that that there was zero chance that Perry wouldn't have accepted another contract with a contender before listening to Chicago's uninterrupted pitch to him, I'm not buying it.

As the cost to Chicago was completely inconsequential.

Seems like a good reason to use a pick you won't miss.

They get an answer from Perry before FA begins.

Either he agrees or they can move on to their next target instead of waiting for Perry to make a decision among a field of offers after July 1st.
