I think the cornerstone piece of this trade is the UFA rights... 35 year old Nick Foligno's don't become available everyday, Chicago had to jump on it.

Great trade for the Blackhawks. Shows you the power of cap space (hence, get cap space, Flames).

Even as a cap dump, low return for hall. We will have to be retaining to get fair value for our players at those rates.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the plan is to play Hall with Bedard, then flip him at the deadline.

The fact that Taylor Hall is now an old guy makes me feel old.

Ian Mitchell was projecting to be a really good offensive defenseman and was one of Chicago's top prospects, but he hit a wall in his development and had a huge drop-off
Montgomery was his coach in college so I wouldn't be surprised if he might be able to get more out of him

This one hits harder for me:
Connor McDavid has been in the league for 8 full seasons (and the Oilers have won nothing).

I assume Foligno was included to balance the number of contracts in and out for Boston. We're still technically in the 2022-23 season and all their upcoming UFAs are still under contract until Friday night.
They probably couldn't take on two contracts without sending two out.
It's like when the Flames sent Leopold to Florida in the Bouwmeester trade. Both players were days away from free agency but it kept the contract numbers the same.

Boston didn't have any RD's coming up, and now have Mitchell and Regula to fight it out for the third pairing behind Carlo and McAvoy. They are also moving out of cap hell. Good job by Boston, IMO.

Taylor Hall has got to be the dumbest Edmonton Oiler of all time, and they had Ryan Smyth

Trying to figure out why Chicago does this. If they don't flip Hall with salary retained it makes little to no sense.

Hall wasn't necessarily a generational player, but I definitely expected more than this.

As fans we only see the transactional side of it, but GMing is as much about relationships too. A little "I scratch your back now..." type energy to this one.

To play with Bedard. Hall has a fair bit of hockey left in him. He's only 31.
It was an obvious trade the moment Chicago got first over all.
They'll flip him with salary retained at next years deadline, unless someone makes an offer they cannot refuse.
