Yay rebuild. Boo you, Tyler.
Love Tyler Foli, but after the season he just had and his age, a long term contract with the team would have been disastrous for us. He should return a nice haul, as he often does when he gets traded. Good on him for doing us a solid and bringing this up now.

Not necessarily, we don't even know what they're getting back yet.

Stock up on 2023 picks, Connie! Make it so.
This team has never and will never commit to a full rebuild. The mantra is always "get whomever we can afford and tell them to pack a lunch, cause all the fans want is a hard-working, blue collar team that will try to get as close to the playoffs as possible."

This org doesn't stock up on picks and prospects. They swap, replace and keep grinding.

I wouldn't be shocked either but I don't see them getting a better center then Kadri. Hoping for the best.

They did after Iggy left. They didn't really optimize assets going into it but they had a run of picking 6, 4th, and 5th. That's a rebuild.

Time to develop Coronato at center. May need him there and soon.

If the cmpdave guy on Twitter is credible, sounds like Toffoli wanted term over money

To me, a rebuild is more than just picking high for a few years. It’s a deliberate strategy of moving veterans out for picks and prospects, knowing you’ll be enduring short-term pain for long-term gain. You need more than just the high picks - you need lots of picks.

The Flames were doing everything right in their rebuild post Iggy. Right up until the Hamonic trade. Then it went to poop.

Then there were bungles galore on the way to where we are now.

With the number of potential moves, I think we can expect all sorts of potentially weird returns on these trades. We all want 2023 first rounders, and hopefully we get at least one more, but I think this opens up many 2024 picks, young guys, reclamation projects, cap dumps, PTOs you name it. I think we'll need to reserve judgement on all of this stuff until we know what team they will actually field. This is going to take all summer...

Yeah, I think the Flames wind up with maybe one extra 1st rounder in 2023 from all this.

I think so too. I should have mentioned that perhaps we get a bunch of 2nds, which isn't so bad depending on the Flames draft board.

TT will get a decent return, no trade protection. Flames can be patient and wait for highest bidder.

We drafted 6th, 4th and 6th, and have subsequently traded each of those players away.

Players that were at least given a fair chance to crack our lineup since the 2011 draft:
1. Sven Baertschi (traded)
2. Johnny Gaudreau (signed in CBJ)
3. Mark Jankowski (traded? cut?)
4. Brett Kulak (traded)
5. Sean Monahan (traded)
6. Sam Bennett (traded)
7. Rasmus Andersson
8. Oliver Kylington
9. Andrew Mangiapane
10. Matthew Tkachuk (traded)
11. Dillon Dube
12. Juuso Valimaki (traded)
13. Adam Ruzicka

10 years of drafting since Iggy left. Only 13 got a real chance at playing. Of those 13, only 4 are still here. It's also worth noting that 3 of those 4 (Andersson, Kylington and Mangiapane) were all drafted in the same year... and we actually traded away our 1st, 3rd and 4th round picks that season, so we got pretty lucky with Andersson and Kylington in the 2nd and Mangiapane in the 6th.

In that same 10 years, we've traded away the following picks:
3x #1
5x #2
5x #3
5x #4
3x #5
2x #6
1x #7

while bringing in:
2x #1
4x #2
3x #3
2x #4
2x #6
1x #7

So... 10 years, 7 picks per year, that's 70 possible players. Of those 70 possible players, 24 were traded out as picks and 14 were brought in as picks, so off the bat that takes us down to only 60 possible players. Of those 60 possible players, only 13 were allowed to play enough NHL games with us to qualify as a rookie. Of those 13, 9 were sent packing - leaving only 4.

During that time, we traded picks for older players. We signed older players. We continued to build the identity of the team around older players. Younger players were told to follow the older players, do with the older guys do, act like the older guys do, etc. The team wasn't rebuilt around younger players, the team continued to build around older players and lucked into some younger guys that (outside of Johnny, Monny and Chucky) were given limited ice time and roles in favour of "learn how to play from these older guys."

You suggest we had a rebuild, but I submit all we had was a "little bit luckier than usual" status quo.

The Flames would have been stupid to not trade him. Pending UFA coming a career year at age 31... he was going to be traded anyway.

Toffoli value is probably higher at TDL than now

It’s too risky to wait that long. Besides, the UFA class this summer is bad. Offering Toff with retention could definitely bring in a stronger return

Maybe, maybe not. Players like all the Flames UFAs usually aren't available during the offseason.
