I doubt they ever move.
The NHL will get more in expansion dollars than they ever would in re-location fees.
The value of the Flames is not in day-to-day operations or tickets sold. It is in Franchise Value - right now that is $650m USD- what SEA paid, regardless of what Forbes says.
Edwards will have to sell before he can move.
I would also expect the NHL to do the same as it has done for PHX over the last 10+ years and try to prevent a move.
For all those who are ok with the team moving and thinking that CGY would be a the top of any expansion/relocation list - That is what Nordiques fans have been thinking for going on 3 decades now. No one will pony up $650m+ USD for a Canadian Team. (QC barely got $400m USD together, IIRC).
There will be a new building and the taxpayer will be on the hook for most of it - either city taxes or provincial taxes.

The Calgary Flames represent the only opportunity to have someone else shoulder part of the cost - if they leave, the city still needs to build a new arena venue, and then they’d have to pay for it all themselves.

They don't have to. If the tax payers don't see value in the benefits it offers, they could just not have one. I'm not a Calgarian anymore, so it's not really my place to have an opinion on that.
Wrt just the team, I actually prefer the look of the flaming A to the flaming C, so I could totally be okay with the change in logo.

Figure it out. Pick a spot and start digging.

Ya WTF is this city doing? They approve a deal, continue to work towards building the arena, agree to renegotiate when CSEC wants to buy CMLC off the project, and then offer to cover more than 50% of some disputed costs despite the previous point.
And after CSEC ran away in bad faith? The city sprung into immediate action forming another committee to save the deal, seeking out some competency in the field of arena building, since CSEC is clearly lacking.

From some recent stuff in the E=NG thread, the BOA thread, and the EDM vs LA playoff thread… there’s been a distinct flavour to some posts lately. You could call it a sour one. Even… garbage, perhaps.

you can have an objective opinion on the makeup and talent (or even lack their of) of a rival hockey team and think they can have success and still believe E=NG
Intellectual Honesty some may say.

Coming out of Covid, attendance at the Dome was down. Even with a good product on the ice for the 2021-2022 season only had one or two sellouts after seat restrictions were lifted. Lack of attendance continued in this past 2022-2023 season.
League wide viewership is also down 22%.
Murray is a smart businessman. Did he maybe recognize that the way people are viewing the game and pro sports in general as well as youth today are not as interested in Pro sports as generations past help him change his mind in investing in a new building?
Calgary still ranked 14th in average attendance out of the 32 teams, with a crappy building and a crappy product this year.I think chances of the Flames moving are very slim and anything that Murray or Bettman says would be negotiating tactic. Owners get money when a new franchise enters, they don't get money if a team moves. The NHLPA is also happier with new teams as that means 23 more players in the union.

There may be a viable reason why the owners are scared to do a full tear down rebuild.
Calgary wasn't selling out every game this year. And the resale market is non-existent, except at a discount under season ticket prices.
|
That’s more a result of poor ownership/management that is fine rolling out a mediocre product year after year.
They almost left before the salary cap came into place. And without a cap they likely would leave because they’d never be competitive. With the cap in place, I don’t see the Flames going anywhere.

If the Coyotes haven’t left Arizona after all these years, I highly doubt a Canadian team would move. Zero concerns from me.

I assume they meant normal run of the mill fans, not the die hard reprobates that frequent these parts. Here we still cheer for the Flames but we’ve let the black cloud of nihilism cover our heart and souls.

Arizona hasn't moved only because Bettman has bent into Non-euclidean shapes to keep them there.
Bettman wouldn't do that for any Canadian team not playing in Toronto.

NHL doesn't really want relocations. They want new teams. Ottawa has multiple suitors to keep the team in the city and so would the Flames. If the Flames did leave town then I'd honestly probably wind down watching hockey all together

Except if the team moved AND Calgary had an expansion team it's a win win for the league. They get a cut of sale proceeds and they get an expansion fee.
