Really sad, gone too young. Condolences to his family and friends, especially his wife and children.

RIP Northendzone

So sad. Condolences to his wife and family. It hurts seeing his recent posts in the Cycling thread, how excited he was about the new things he ordered for his bike etc. And then, poof, he’s gone. RIP

Amazing quote too. I presume Northendzone would be OK that some of us are going to take it and continue its usage.

Never met the guy, but I'll raise a glass in his honor. Seemed like a great guy. 57 is way too young.

Another tragedy, another huge loss for CP. All the best to his family and friends.

This thread made me think of CP member Phanuthier who passed away some years ago. We are not just usernames on a discussion forum.

My heart goes out to Ross and his family.

I emailed about donating to the bicycle fund and received a message from his son.

Quote:
Thank you for the message. Ross loved Calgary Puck and we would all hear him laughing everyday from some post on the page.

My Mother and I set up a bank account to funnel the donations directly into buying bikes, instead of using a GoFundMe or other websites as they take some of the money donated, and we want to make sure that 100% of the donations will be used on what my Dad loved the most. We have partnered with his favourite bike shop on Macloed, The Bike Shop South, in which we will buy the bikes from them and they will make sure that the children who receive the bikes have them properly fitted to their needs. The best way to donate would be to send an E-transfer to this email address (rosspatonmemorial@gmail.com) that is connected to the bank account we have set up.

Thank you again Kevin for reaching out. If you have any other questions please let me know.

Kind Regards,

Ben, Joann, and Lauren

I knew I recognized Ross. Joann and him purchased a vehicle from us about a year and a half ago. Also, I think I may have met him a couple time at the CP drafts when I used to attend them (perhaps someone can confirm that.).

Regardless, condolences to the family, and those close to him. Even though my memory isn't what it once was, I recall him being a really nice guy.

As I'm currently decluttering my basement, I have a really nice hardly used Trek Mountain bike I poured a lot of money into over the years I'd be happy to donate to his memorial fund that I'm sure some young man or lady in need could definitely pile some miles on it. It spent more time waiting for upgrades on my bike stand than being actually being ridden. At one point I shared the same bike disease as Ross.

RIP to a good man.

It makes me wonder though if we've lost others who weren't as well connected offline as some seem to be.

Just the reality of things I guess that social networks will have different densities, but for example aside from one infrequent poster in the Off Topic section who I was in a University club with ~20 years ago, I don't know any other posters offline. I'll bet there are a lot of folks like that.

Anyway I'm sad about Northendzone but it's nice to see an obit as warmly written as his was. He was obviously loved, and when death inevitably comes that's hopefully of some comfort.

It makes me wonder how many users know each other in real life and don't even know it

I’d guess a not insignificant number.

I've probably met over 30 CP members in real life.

Between the CP annual hockey drafts and the welcome to Calgary party for Calgaryboy in 2017 I'd say it's close to 25+ members for me.

Funny, years ago I was leaving Starbucks (Brentwood, I think?) just as you were entering, and it took me about 20 minutes afterwards to place you. The kid you were with was barely walking, FWIW.
