Voracek for Atkinson was a good move.
Gostisbehere, a 2nd and a 7th for future considerations then Hägg, a 1st and a 2nd for Ristolainen back-to-back -- ouch. And he acquired a concussed $6M Ellis just before that.

It's a fair question, but IMO they absolutely should have done so, especially in comparison to what they did instead:
- on UFA day they traded 2nd+3rd+4th for Deangelo then signed 2x5M). 34pts and a team worst -28 (Hayes is 2nd at -16)...and apparently he his suspended right now, but at least it was for on-ice conduct
Why not sign Gaudreau, and trade any forward(s) for help on the blueline?

You can even tack on the 3rd that Ghost just fetched at the deadline. I think it's more fun to list it like this:
Ghost
2nd
7th
Hagg
1st (14OA in 2021)
2nd (2023 - so it's gonna be mid 30s)
3rd
for
Ristolainen
And Ghost has 35pts and -7 on the season (mostly in horrid ARI). Risto has 14pts -4, but Deangelo - effectively Ghost's replacement - has 34pts -28.

Here he discusses it with Seravalli around the 11:30 mark. He says that the team checked in with Brad and there were contract talks. He also mentions that it's not only the Flames decision, and Tre might be the one that wants a change.

Sure, no doubt. But they are a better candidate for a rebuild than Calgary and they spun their wheels. They are paying a lot of mediocre guys long term. They could have been much better than 6.5% chance at Bedard, and have additional cracks at first round talent had they divested Konecny, JVR etc.
Look at their roster and contracts and tell me where they are as a franchise.

Lifetime Suspension

Pierre LeBrun in his article says the Flames did have extension talks with Treliving when they signed Sutter but it didn't go anywhere and hes not sure why. He believes they will talk again prior to the season ending on getting a extension done.
He probably has the best handle on the Flames out of all the "insiders"

Purgatory.
But you have an entertaining player who wants to be there at below market value. If you tell him you'll be tearing things down and he's still happy to come, why not? You can try for an NYR style thing and you've already got your Panarin. Gaudreau didn't hurt CBJ's Bedard chances.

TBF it sounds like he didn't have this 'app' until very recently and could have really used it...or even just a magic 8 ball would have been better.

They have really depleted their draft picks from 2023-2025 with only 5 picks in the first 4 rounds over the next three years.
Matthews is a UFA after next season. As is Nylander.
Tavares and Marner UFA's the season after.
Could be a tough situation in Toronto over the next 24 months with a lot of high profile UFAs, and no draft capital.

Just making room for $16M x 7 years pitch to McDavid in 3 years.

Yup, trade Mathews and Nylander to recover the draft picks and when McDiver sees Toronto making cap room, he won't re-sign with Deadmonton. THAT would be hilarious.

Taking a while to get to 5000

I thought McDavid & Matthews are both going to go to Arizona cause they play together in Phoenix during the off season?
Throw in Bedard going there in the lottery and we'll have conspiracy theories for days. Weeks even.

I will say... I'm hoping that Treliving stays on as GM more now knowing that Chuck Fletcher is a potential replacement.
Oh man would that be a huge downgrade.
