From reading the reports on the case, I think it is safe to say that this ruling has nothing (zero, zip, nada) to do with the gay marriage ruling.
No kidding...since you might as well be PM PM's media secretary.

I'm fairly sure you couldn't, say, drag your dog out into the backyard and beat it to death. It does have _some_ rights. But I can't back this up... yet.
Its really limited... as in, you can be fined for animal cruelty for the same reasons that you can be fined for playing a radio too loud after 11pm... a lot of people don't like it.

You can't beat someone else's dog cause its destruction of their property... and again, I'm pretty sure its either a fine, or community service.

I am a real proponent of animal rights and stiff penalties for abuse of animals... to me, if someone can kill a puppy or a kitten in cold blood... they clearly lack morals and could easily be a threat to something else helpless, like a child or baby.

I don't know the specifics but I'm quite sure that abusing an animal is a bigger deal, legally, than playing your radio too loud.

If the cops show up because you have Aerosmith's Greatest Hits cranked up they'll tell you to turn it down.

If the cops show up and find you beating a Border Collie with a pitching wedge they'll do a little more than ask you to take it inside so the neighbours can't hear hear the racket.
