And there will likely be more buyers in the summer as well

Other than the end , where sutter lost his marbles, let’s look at who he brought in

Kipper
Tanguay
Langkow
Huselius
Cammalleri
Jokinen
Backlund
Giordano
Brodie
Bouwmeester
Phaneuf

Outside of drafting, short term team building, sutter might be better than treliving.

The Flames definitely got a little better today.

Sadly, for a decent amount of us, that isn’t necessarily what we wanted to see

This was the correct move IMO. The team didn't give anything up. Most of the trade chips aren't UFA's until summer of 2024. Teams are not super keen on taking on cap right now. So that extra year is not adding to any value.

The plan is clearly run it again and hope for better luck next year. The Flames lead the league in post shots and their goalies were miserable. So next year might actually produce totally different results.

If people can't wait an extra year for a sell off, then things are really going to get rough when they realize a rebuild is 3+ years of awfulness followed by a few years of mediocrity.

I’m actually relieved that Brad Treliving will never make a decision for this franchise again.

In the summer, you can give them permission to talk contract with another team, which might max out the value. I highly doubt you could get more for Toffoli or Hanifin now than in the summer.
Do you think owners will let the team trade Toffoli / Lindholm / Tanev / Hanifin this summer when the mandate will be to make the playoffs next season (hope for better goaltending).

I think they missed a huge opportunity. Could have added a mid-late 1st + for Hanifin and / or Toffoli and then maybe signed a 2nd pairing D and hoped for some development from Pelletier or Coronato. Then you would also have a 1st in a strong draft.

Maybe they still deal those guys for 1sts at the draft but typically teams pay less for roster guys at the draft and more at the deadline. This summer lots of teams will be selling roster players for cap management.

Edit - forgot to add, not sure how Lewis wasn't dealt for a late pick. Unless 0 playoff teams were interested in him.

I'm done with team for the season, not much to look forward to here anymore. Time to shelve all things Flames until the fall and go all in on the Cavalry!

I, for one, am glad that we will have those two contribute to next year’s team. Otherwise we would just have even more holes to fill.

I will have to think they learned their lesson last year ... just can't go into the season with high-profile UFAs. I think it's not an issue with the older guys (Backlund and Tanev), but when it comes to Toffoli, Lindholm and Hanifin, I think you absolutely have to either re-sign them in the summer or trade them for assets. Now I don't know if that'll happen, but as a fan I'd like to think they care about asset management.

Agree with this part, even if Sutter loves him

The team is going and not rebuilding at the moment. We agree with it or not, that seems to be the direction. Both of them are signed to decent cap hit deals and if the year doesn’t work out next year, they can definitely be flipped for a decent return next deadline.

That's life being a sports team. You aren't always going to get something for every pending UFA.

It doesn't mean either they won't trade any this summer or re-sign any.

If any proposals they got today weren't worth it I'm fine with it. You shouldn't trade someone for the sake of trading them and Treliving made it known weeks ago he wouldn't be. The same people who are pissed he didn't trade any '24 UFAs would still be pissed if he ended up getting ripped off.

Agreed. People who say there is not direction don’t understand that what you described is a plan, just not the plan they wanted.

So the common saying around here is that "they'll deal with the big 6 in the summer." Ok. Say you're Don Waddell. It's early July. Treliving calls you and re-engages on Toffoli. He wants a 1st plus. Firstly there are 4-5 free agents you're after you can get for no picks. Two you've made a habit out of taking advantage of teams needing to dump cap - you got Burns and Pacioretty for free, why pay? Third Toffoli and ALL of these players are now impending UFAs and you can wait until the 2024 deadline. You say thanks Brad but call us back near the 2024 deadline.

Treliving haters make me laugh. Such simple folk.

Flames #1 goalie goes from Vezina finalist to complete and utter sieve, and this is somehow Treliving's fault. Haha

I’m not a hater by any means but then whose fault is it? The buck has to stop somewhere and they’ve made zero changes to the roster, coaching, or supplemental coaching staff. I spose we can throw our hands up and say cest la vie but if GM isn’t responsible for the team he’s built then who is?
