Maybe you avoid all this. He retires a King, can stay around the team, etc

Maybe they did and he said no.
You can't keep players on your team who are tanking you.

Thats the kind of trade that can mess with chemistry and morale. I'm sure they'll be fine, but that's going to sting for the vets.

Like the Flames did with Kipper. I think they were going to get a 2nd round pick from Toronto but I he said he wanted to stay and would retire after the season. His NMC apparently expired after 2011-12 so they didn't have to even ask him.

Why would the bjs do this one for one without a 1st rounder?

It isn’t 1 for 1
Gavrikov is also going to LA and a 1st is going to CBJ. Also other parts of the deal haven’t been announced.

Different situations.
Flames out of the playoff mix sending him to a,team in the mix.
This is a playoff team trying to stabilize a important position. We are witnessing now crappy goaltending can sabotage a season in Calgary.
LA made the right move.

If trading him is bad for morale, threatening to "retire" him would not be any better.

I don't blame them for trying to improve their goaltending. Just like I wouldn't have blamed the Flames trading Kipper for a pick. But the Flames asked him out of respect for what he's done for the team when they didn't have to.

And Kipper may not have reported either. Columbus doesn't care if Quick stays home and never plays a game for them..
Toronto wanted Kipper or there was no deal. Kipper had no interest.

But as already mentioned - The Flames were trending towards the bottom of the NHL and didn't have a reason to improve goaltending. The Kings are in the mix to win the division and two solid goaltenders is often key to winning a division and going on a playoff run.
100% the right move by the kings here.

Again, I'm not disputing them trying to improve their goaltending.

But then there's your answer. I mean I can see what you're insinuating in your post. That the Flames respected a long tenured goalie in Kipper's desires and the Kings didn't respect Quicks.
Hence the rest of my post explaining why it would be completely wrong and absurd for the Kings to let him play out his career out of respect, have Copley get injured and now they're down to Quick as an inadequate starter in what could have been a huge playoff run.

the West is wide open this year and they saw a chance to improve their goaltending, so on one hand, I get it. But come on, that's a franchise legend with about 20 games left in his career. And you thank him for his services by sending him to freaking Columbus? Brutal. Again, I get the on-ice argument, but damn ... it's a cold, cold business.

What am I missing here? I know nothing about Korpisolo or the other guy going with him but for Columbus to get a first with Quick sounds pretty good to me. No doubt they’ll get another first when they inevitably trade him.

I doubt it. Quick has worse numbers than Markstrom this year. 3.50 GAA and .876 save percentage

Not really. Happy endings in professional sports is fantasy as it's a business to win. The Kings like every other team holding a playoff spot are in business to win a cup. They had no chance to make a deep playoff run with Quick and Copley. Not sure how far Korpisalo will take them but he's better than both of those goaltenders and offords the team a better chance. Optics aren't great but this is the right move for the organization.
