I would think a good bet would be betting on the Elks to lose at home.

I more just get annoyed at the volume of them then the actual content. Every ad is a commercial trying to get me to spend money at things I probably don't need.

TV commercials are one thing. Celebrity endorsement, ads during game and on the ice is where the line should have been drawn. Disgusting by the NHL.

I know lots of people gamble but I’m generally surprised that they gamble enough to warrant all these companies paying for advertisement.

From what I've gathered: Too much vig.

Even if you're smart enough to beat the other bettors, the house percentage is so large that you generally end up losing money in the long run. Each sport has its own house percentage, and it appears that the CFL and NHL run very high.

They don't. This is the gambling version of the 1990s dotcom bubble. In search engines alone, Yahoo, AltaVista, AskJeeves, and several other companies were frantically burning through venture capital to try to buy market share. Each company had a perfectly sound plan to make a profit eventually, as long as they captured close to 100% of the search-engine market. Then Google came along and they all went broke, or else skedaddled into other lines of business.

Most of these sports books will be gone in a few years. The survivors won't need saturation advertising to maintain their business.

The Alberta context. FWIW.

I personally feel annoyed by the gambling ads on TV.

Its definetely a transitory period for sports betting, on one end, youve got 25 year olds sitting on buckets of money trying to figure out any way to break and bend the rules. On the other end, youve got geriatric polticians trying to understand the particulars of online gambling.

Gambling has permanently changed the gaming industry. There was a period where nearly every successful game was free to play with loot box systems (ie - gambling). Many countries have responded by passing laws against these types of systems and the industry is drifting away, but not before they invested billions developing thousands of ways of incorporating gambling into their business models.

Are the gambling commercials annoying, yes, but I don't see why people are drawing the line of what's socially acceptable at gambling. Alcohol related issues within society are way worse, yet why haven't there been any outrage over beer and alcohol advertising?

Going through the trade/rumors/arm chair GM threads, it's basically universally expected and applauded through the hockey community that the cap is going to go up the next few years, and that's fine. But to turn around and then criticize how the league is generating that extra revenue is quite hypocritical.

It would be sad if it turns out he has a gambling problem. [no rumour]

I'm shocked that McDavid is allowed to appear on NHL gambling ads. That's way to close to the line for me.

Didn't wrestling get it's start in carnivals? As in pure carnie theatrical shows? Was there ever a time when you could bet on pro wrestling?

Either way, the disgusting nature of these recent gambling ads do feel like they erode the legitimacy of sports. I'm not sure who has less integrity, a shouting Hulk Hogan type buffoon or the NHL/Sportnet advertising executives.

Bill Hicks was right, if you work in advertising you should off yourself.

Probably, not a lot of options for venues in the early 1900s, lots of different kinds of live shows would have been carnival based back then. Carnival culture is stiil deeply ingrained into the wrestling business. Boxing and wrestling used to be the two most popular sports in America and were held in similar regard.

It's not just commercials. Every highlight pack during intermission has a huge banner with live money line odds on it.

I was recently in San Francisco and watched a TNT broadcast and didn't see any of this BS.

Unless DraftKings et al is paying 3x for a spot, they can get bent IMO.

The UFC is getting pretty unbearable too. They can hardly introduce a fighter these days without listing the odds of them winning in every type of way

The new infomercial-like Cabbie segments on HNIC are beyond awful. As if the constant ads were not enough, now there must also be a "segment" during the intermissions as well.

thought i'd toss this little snippet in from EF's 32 Thoughts this week (as an aised, he notes that this is his last 32 thoughts column):

"Growing complaint among fans who gamble: changes to shots on goal well after initially awarded. You’d be surprised at the number of people who comb these odds much more carefully than I comb my hair. If you’re going to take gambling money, you’ve got to make sure the changes are minimal."

i am assuming that this gets to those wagering enthusiasts who place bets on the number of shots - but maybe i am not correctly interpreting what EF is noting

It's more than even that. Now much of the analysis and commentary in the intermissions is a discussion of odd, props, etc. It's getting harder to get any commentary that doesn't reference gambling in some way.

This is amazing. I hope it starts happening all of the time until they get to the point that they remove those glitchy pos' all together. As humorous as it is to see the air Canada logo over the front of Markstrom's Mask when he plays the puck, I am completely over it. Actually wishing for a standard definition feed so that the whole thing is crappy all of the time rather than 50% of the time. That way I don't think that I'd be bothered as much.

It's time to put this idea away for another year until they improve their execution.
