Wishing Rick the best, get well soon.

Dude, I hope you’re okay. Did you have some kind of blood clot or something?

Thanks! Yeah, turned out it was a blood clot that had travelled up into my lung. Originally it started out as this incredibly sharp pain that would flare up around my right hip/back of my rib cage whenever I laid down - definitely the worst physical pain I’ve felt in my life and I couldn’t lie down without screaming. Went to the emergency room and after having blood work and remaining there all night, they still didn’t know what was wrong with me and sent me home with pain killers and told me to monitor it closely.

Next night after coming home, I started to cough blood and luckily the same Emergency Room doctor was available to talk on the phone. He encouraged me to come in immediately. Ran a CT scan on me, where they found the clot.

It was tough to deal with mentally for the first couple of weeks because I am young and have always been healthy. But going on a lot of walks, getting exercise, and getting excited for Flames games helped get me back to normal. I have to take blood thinners twice a day now for the rest of my life since there was no direct cause found (hadn’t travelled or got injured recently) but other than that life feels normal like it was before the PE happened.

Very similar to what happened to my girlfriend last year while she was pregnant. Pain in the back, wouldn't go away for a few days. She figured it was muscular, so she did chiro which alleviated the pain for a few hours. On day four we went to the ER and they advised it was a moderate sized clot. Not a killer, but definitely an issue. Blood thinners for the rest of the pregnancy. Apparently it is a semi normal thing for pregnant women to get blood clots due to the increased hormone levels. Who knew.

Had a friend lose her leg due to a blood clot as well. They are scary things.

Get well soon Rick!

I wondered if there could be a connection between Rick Ball’s broken leg and the PE, not sure of the time frame that makes sense between the injury and the clot moving to his lung.

Has to be scary though, glad to hear you doing better.

Thank you for sharing your story. It may help others with similar unexplained/unexpected pain. Glad to hear you are well on the road to recovery. All the best, and enjoy the flames games.

FYI Eric Francis today said Ball will be on his 960 show next Monday to provide an update on how he's doing so I expect it to be bumped likely a week from today.

I had PE nearly 7 years ago. Six months on blood thinners, and have been fine ever since.

I like Rick Ball, and hope he is alright. He is excellent at his job, and when interviewed outside of his job comes across as a really nice genuine guy.

But are we sure he didn’t just take this time off to watch the Women’s Rugby World Cup?

Rick would be the first to laugh at that, great sense of humour and a great guy!

Get well soon!

We're 6 games in and his voice is a noticed absence. Unbelievable commentator and even better person from what I hear.

I'm at great risk for PE's and have heard they're vicious. Hope he gets taken care of and has a full recovery!

I agree but it’s only a 6 hour telecast about Ron Maclean and the oilers so I don’t think that there will be enough time.

After Hartley’s first season, I was fortunate enough to deal with Rick for an hour through work - I delivered his new car to him.

Utter gem of a human being, and a terrific voice for the game.

Second only to Bartlett among working PBP for my money.

Wishing you a full and fast recovery, Mr Ball.

I unfortunately missed the interview. Did anyone hear and able to share what happened and how he's doing?

Scary life changing (no surprise) but he hopes to be on the road trip with them I believe.

I think I have this right, apologies if I missed something.

Long story short he broke his leg and shortly after decided to take a trip and flew. Developed blood clots, which made it to his lungs. He passed out one night and was transported to hospital.

I've heard of people dying this way, he's very lucky.
