Caps didn't think he was worth a contract either like the rest of the league...then they got injuries, signed him, Waived him, put him in the AHL and then called him up.

One of the worst teams in the league didn't qualify him.

Let's not make this a Flames thing

I think that's an exaggeration, but for 2 camps straight they haven't "liked" any one in attendance that was fighting for a spot. so either every one not a regular has just been terrible & unworthy, or they're reading too much into a 2 week segment in september, when most guys haven't yet gotten up to speed

last camp, they probably had a case .. this one, I don't buy that they didn't have any viable top 9 options in attendance

Phillips and Zary made cases, and they probably sent both down prematurely. Milano didn't stick out, but signing him would've presented no risk and the upside was probable, because he is more or less a proven entity at this level, at least to put up middle six numbers

not hanging coaching and management, but I think they made some poor decisions this year - first signing Rooney without a look in camp, and expecting Milano to be all worldly and impress sutter in a short window playing on the 4th line, and not choosing to sign him for pennies which left them in a worse situation where they're using grinders to fill roles they're not cut out for

Sutter is a harsh evaluator and thriving under his system/style takes time. playing up to his expectations in such a short window is a tough task. I think anybody coming in for a job was being set up to fail right from the start ... it's worse that they were going to be be evaluated playing with low skill vets

not a huge deal, probably doesn't move the needle much either way, but they should've signed him
You’ve heard the expression hindsight is 20/20? People have to make decisions and they made them.

He wouldn’t have made any difference.

No. Glad flames didn't keep. If they did - rudzidka doesn't get much time.

Imagine the uproar if the Flames signed him to a contract after doing zilch in training camp and then he continued to do zilch during the regular season. People would be all over Treliving, and rightfully so. He had a chance with the Flames and did nothing with it. No regrets here at all, regardless what he does with the Caps or elsewhere.

I still can't believe the Flames didn't sign him to a contract and then gift him top 6 minutes following that lackluster camp. Makes no sense. Sutter!

Lol. Why was there a thread started for this in the first place. There are many fringe players who are fast, big, have a hard shot, etc.. But lack overall game. They typically get released to the free market around 23-24 and pass around the league.

They sometimes get signed. The Flames sign players like that all the time. The Flames have Zahorna and Mackey on the team right now.

I mean last year Milano was a .52/ppg player.... Now he's on a hot streak and is a .65ppg player? He's a known quantity. He's a floater with speed, who in a top six roles can put up 35-55 points.... Who cares. That's not good. If the Flames gifted Blake Coleman top six minutes and told him to stop worrying about his defensive game, you'd get the same results.
