But they were top 10 in the league in PP. I suppose it could still be more effective, but whatever Johnny was doing was working.

Florida's PP was the 5th-best in the NHL last season and Huberdeau was their leader in PP ice time and PP points.

The Flames were 10th overall. Florida was a full 1.5% better on the PP than Calgary.

Also, Kadri had the 3rd-most points on the 6th-best PP in the league last year.

It worked at the start of the year but once teams game planned for it the effectiveness went way down later in the season.

Take a look at this Huberdeau guy we brought in. Apparently he’s pretty good.

Lehkonen - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Nichushkin - Newhook - Rodriguez
Meyers - Compher - O'Connor

Lehkonen is 27 and has never had a 20 goal season. His best season ever was 19-19-38 last year in 74 games. Compare that to Toffoli

Newhook is a 21 YO with 76 career games and 13 career goals. Good young player, but risk for a 2C

Meyers has 5 career games, Compher is a 30 pt guy, and O'Connor's career high is 24 pts. So their 3rd line had 57 pts last year COMBINED. Backlund, Coleman and Lewis had 88.

No team is without holes. And every team has Toffoli and or Dube type players in their top 6. The Flames' top 9 depth is as good as any in the league. Though it won't be a surprise if Treliving adds to it.

Rodriguez is 29 and last year he hit 10 goals for the first time in his career (19). Compare him to Dube.
Due to Landeskog being hurt though they have a weaker top 9.

And Vladar did play the Avs twice last year, so Sutter is not adverse to starting him against a contender.

Exactly and I don't think he would be adverse to play him against pretenders as well like the No Good's up north.

Let's slow down a little. Markstrom is a Vezina nominated big-ticket goalie. I could see Vladar getting the Buffalo start, and maybe the Pittsburgh game. If he starts two games this month—with this home-heavy, light schedule—that's a good sign. What I don't see happening is Vladar getting starts v. the Flames's top rival, especially not on a Saturday night on HNIC in October. If that happens it is a sure sign that something has gone wrong.
