Emil Bemstrom a bit of a surprise to be on waivers. I could see a team with a weak backup picking up Conor Ingram from the Nashville, as well.

Foligno is a bit of a surprise. Looks like he fell off a cliff in the 20/21 season.
Looks like a similar fate as Simmonds.

Betting they are going to roll with what they have for the first 20 games. Tinkering with current roster to optimize it.
If still have gaps I bet changes happen then.

34 years old and $3.8M good for maybe a couple dozen points.
The thing is, this is why fans are often okay with deals to a point but there will come a day when Huberdeau and Kadri will be deep in their 30s and we're going to regret some of those contracts.
The key is making the best use out of them in their primes.

Guess there’s an endpoint for everyone. But the guy was a team captain at one point. Just not how you’d figure he would go out.

How many players left now for the Flames? It does seem like the pre-season is dragging on a bit too long.
So Valamaki was the only player claimed per that tweet posted? Sounds like a lot of players that were easy to waive and that other teams don’t want or need. Why have such along pre-season, it must be for extra games and revenue which is okay I suppose.
I think the Leafs and Habs were out in the Maritimes which is cool, also Vegas playing in Boise against the Coyotes.

Bemstrom is a must claim imo. That’s the third line guy you are looking for. I like Gauthier too.

I think someone might take Will Butcher. He is a smaller defenseman and has put up decent numbers in the past. He is on a league minimum and has never actually played in the minors.

Assuming Zohorna and Gilbert are sent down:
Forwards (13) - Kadri, Huberdeau, Mangiapane, Backlund, Lucic, Coleman, Lindholm, Toffoli, Dube, Rooney, Lewis, Ruzicka, Ritchie.
Defense (8) - Hanifin, Andersson, Tanev, Zadorov, Weegar, Kylington, Meloche, Mackey.
Goalies (2) - Markstrom, Vladar
That's 23 right there, which is the maximum allowed limit.
Still with the team
IR(2) - Pettersen, Pospisil
PTO(1) - Stone
Cleared waivers(2) - Zohorna, Gilbert
I'm still not certain if Kylington's contract will count against the limit. If it does, then the Flames need to waive another defenseman before the start of the season in order to sign Stone, or give Stone an AHL contract for now.

Gauthier is built like a bodybuilder and skates very well. Not much else to him. Maybe Sutter could coax something out of him.
Simmonds was a poor skater in his prime, nevermind now. Still one of the toughest in the league though.
Borgstrom is a huge disappointment. He can play a really effective power-forward style, but he’s not on enough.

I've always liked Simmonds but his time has passed.
34 years old, although at $900K he's not a bad option, good for a couple dozen points?
34 is popping up a lot recently, seemingly the tail-end of the 'wrong side of 30.'

I think he's related to former Flame Denis Gauthier. Uncle I believe.
Big Quebec family of pro wrestlers.

I'm guessing that even if Kylington's salary counts against the cap, he can be designated a non-roster player until he comes back. That would put the Flames at 22 men and leave them room to sign Stone if they wish, or to add another forward.

Powerplay Quarterback

I would look at Leason. Good defensive metrics last year, good size and still only 23.
I could see the Flames taking a chance on Gauthier, the size and skating make him intriguing, but has no hockey sense or defensive awareness.
Bemstrom would be a good fit, but I think Sutter is looking for more size and bite in the top 9.
I wouldn’t mind Simmonds, but only if he clears and we send Ritchie the other way. That’s the only way it makes sense to me.
A little surprised Mike Reilly is on waivers. At $3m he makes too much for us to claim him.

I think I said the same thing about Foligno. But he's also way more expensive than Simmonds. He essentially priced himself out of a roster spot.
