Been taking the family to Mexico at Christmas for 21 years now. Most of the time to PV but also Cancun, Acapulco and Cabo.. My son was 1.5 years old the first time we went.

New York City is an amazing, magical place at Christmas time and while not "warm" the weather is usually pretty good. Last year on Christmas Day it was a high of 52 (11 C).

But the best part is just the spirit of the city. Rockefeller, Macy's, store shop lights, etc.

What do your kids like doing? If going slightly off the beaten path, IMO Louisiana seems like an interesting place to be for food and things to see that they wouldn't normally see in Calgary.

Houston and Phoenix has great stuff for the kids, but it doesn't feel like a totally different world.

I imagine the flights are much different at Christmas time, but there are some insane deals on round trip tickets to Hawaii...just booked the wife and I in March for $940 TOTAL, taxes included.

If you don't have the Westjet card, one spouse per kid + companion pass + so much free checked luggage is pretty awesome.

I think people how have never had the card also get extra welcome value.

Yep I do have the WJ card. I didn't use a companion pass in this case though as it actually would have been more expensive, or close to the same, so not worth it.

What do you mean by "one spouse per kid" though?

Wasn't my comment, but my wife and I have 2 kids and 2 westjet cards and generally use the companion passes at the same time.

I buy a ticket for me and get the discount on one kid.
She buys the ticket for her and gets the discount on the other kid.

Can make for a big savings, especially on peak travel times (eg school holidays)

Do you have separate WJ rewards accounts for you and your wife? I'm the primary on ours, and my wife wasn't able to use one of the passes b/c she's not the primary. Rather annoying.

Yes. We have separate westjet cards, one account each.

The secondary card fee is $59 and the full fee is $119. So for an extra $60 per year you get an extra companion pass, which is worth it to us.

The upfront $450 westjet dollar bonus also effectively pays that fee difference for many years.

Flights to Mexico definitely go way up around Christmas and drop after the first week in January.

Explained better than I did by Bizarro already.

Another "perk" of the split accounts is that if you end up in a situation where one spouse doesn't use the card as a primary card (or much at all), as long as there is enough activity for the card to not be considered inactive, you can call up customer service to ask and see if they're willing to halve or waive the annual fee in lieu of you/your spouse canceling the card. I discovered this too late in the middle of the pandemic.
